So helpful words cannot express,
This review is from: Life On Cripple Creek: Essays on Living with Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
There are no words that can express how this book helped me. I have had MS for over 30 years and so often felt I was the only one who felt like I do. This book was so helpful I have sent one to each of our four grown children so maybe now they will understand why their mom is the way she is. As Dean says in the book & I have heard so often and for so many years, but you look so good. Thank you Dean you have made my life so much more understandable to not only friend's family but also me. I will treasure this book always. Susan

A wry yet practical look at dealing with reality,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life On Cripple Creek: Essays on Living with Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an incurable and often painful disease in which the body's immune system periodically attacks the body itself. Very highly recommended reading, Life On Cripple Creek: Essays On Living With Multiple Sclerosis is a profound, heartfelt, touching memoir by essayist and journalist Dean Kramer of the matter-of-fact daily trials of living with MS. From selecting shoes that don't aggravate MS-based pain, yet don't look like something a geriatric person would wear; to dilemmas in dating; to reacting quickly to the threat of a hornet's nest; the essays comprising Life On Cripple Creek collectively provide the reader with an individual testimony, a moving memoir, and a wry yet practical look at dealing with reality and making the most out of life.

This book is a collection of essays that you can take in little bites or devour all at once. It's so well written that a writer friend of mine asked to borrow it to model a book she's working on after it!As for me, I laughed and I cried. I have had MS for a year and I love the reality of this book. It's neither doom and gloom nor is it a sugar coated "Hey, you can do it" kind of book. It's a real life peek into someone's life who is coping with the realities of MS. It is always helpful to know that you're not alone in life's challenges, that we can meet the challenges and triumphs of each new day with humor and honesty. Dean Kramer writes with honesty and openness. I found the book a comfort and wish I had more like it.

I once gave a small smile to a doctor over one of MS's odd effects, and he glared at me and said, "Why are you laughing about this?" Well, gee, Doc--what are my alternatives? I wish Dean had been beside me with her wry wit to tell him how the cow ate the cabbage when it comes to living with one of the goofiest diseases on the planet. There is so much over which we have no control, but surrendering humor should not be a requirement, no matter how much grumpy doctors or grumpy others think it should be.
Thank you, Dean, for the gift of your observations and writing that lifts our spirits. This cow thinks it's fine cabbage--and I'm definitely a fan.

I liked this writer's ability to go deeper and talk about very personal emotional issues related to having MS.

Anyone that has MS needs to read this book!! This book gave me a different outlook on my life. I find myself laughing at myself all the time and Dean let me know that was normal. (If Normal is a word for MS'ers) Please read this book and allow your family to read it also. Your family will understand MS better especially without all the medical terms. Thank you Dean for writing this book.

I wanted to read how someone else was living and dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. What is she doing that I could learn from to improve my way of thinking. What am I doing that may be too much, or what can I learn to improve my way of thinking and feeling about myself when my body isn't working correctly. I have not finished the book, but found parts rather funny. It also gave me a feeling of ease knowing that I am not alone. I am doing things just as she is doing, but found I don't have to be perfect. I need to do what I can and rest when is needed.
