Book Description

0873551877 978-0873551878 April 2001 Pap/Pstr
Your students need to understand that stuff doesn't just happen - it has a life cycle. Using common products like the telephone, this lively book helps students learn about the flow of energy and matter through the Earth's system. Seven illustrated sections (useful as stand-alone units or as a cumulative program) give you hands-on activities to teach:

- What is a Life Cycle?
- How does product design influence the life cycle?
- What are products made of and why?
- How can products be less wasteful at the end of their useful lives?

Ideal for teachers who cover integrated science, physical science, environmental science, and Earth science.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well thought-out, integrated high school science and technology curriculum, April 23, 2007
This review is from: The Life Cycle of Everyday Stuff (Paperback)
I purchased this book for ideas about interdisciplinary projects linking science, technology, and math, and I have been very pleased. The book outlines a 5 or 6 week project leading students through a discovery process concerning the life cycle of common technology items. The emphasis is on the stages in the life cycle and impacts of technology. Too often, technology instruction focuses on the "gee whiz" components of hardware and software, and I applaud lessons that challenge students to consider the impacts of technology--both positive and negative.

After the Introduction, the units include:
1 What Is a Life Cycle?
2 Dissecting a Telephone - Design
3 Raw Materials - Acquisition and Processing
4 Manufacturing a Product
5 The Useful Life of a Product
6 A Tale of Two Cups - Disposal and Reuse
7 Redesigning a Product

The project includes a science lab, hands-on activities, discussion, research, writing, and calculation. It is structured as a series of lesson plans for teachers with student activities. Well written. I'm looking forward to using it next year in my technology courses.
