Grant's much larger army, with every material advantage, eventually won. There was no disgrace by the Confederates, unless you count increasingly increasing desertion. Considering that many of these were due to starvation, and many more due to men wanting to rescue their families from the terrorism that Sherman considered necessary and proper, the army was remarkably faithful.
