5.0 out of 5 stars Why is it important to follow God's will
Dr. James Dobson opens the reader's eyes in this short, but potent work. I read this book in just one afternoon; in this time my view about my future and my own personal goals and aspirations was altered significantly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Precarious Path
Life is truly a precarious path.

George Orwell once wrote (the last paragraph before his death)that at fifty "a man wears the face he deserves," yet every old face was once young.

A path leading near dangerous edges, and against obstructions that are particularly dangerous for the young. It is to the young that this book is written- a book to guide...

Dr. James Dobson opens the reader's eyes in this short, but potent work. I read this book in just one afternoon; in this time my view about my future and my own personal goals and aspirations was altered significantly.

Learning how to fit God into my future is one of the most difficult problems that I, as a Christian, struggle with. Reading this book helped me to realize how important it is that God not fit into my agenda, but rather, my agenda should fit around God's.

Please understand that this book will not give you an easy pathway to God's will for your life. It will, however, give to you the reason why it is so important that your life be focused around God. As Christians, we know that God's will is best for our future. However, as humans it is in our nature to do what we want and feel is best for our own life. Dobson's goal in this book is help the reader realize that in the long run of life, it is not our own meek achievements that will matter; in fact they will soon be forgotten. He succeeds in illustrating that searching for and following God's will is the only way that any person can hope to have a life of satisfaction and significance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all young adults, March 6, 2000
This review is from: Life on the Edge (Hardcover)
I'm a 24-year-old college graduate. I studied physics and mathematics while attending Wheaton College in Norton Massachusetts and I pride myself on my intelligence and my maturity. I can honestly say that after reading Dr. James Dobson's book "Life on the Edge" I had a completely different look at the world around me, and I immediately dropped my egotistical attitude. I have recently lost whom I believed to be my soul mate and it was this loss that prompted me to try and make some sense of my life. My mother obviously noticed how much I had been hurting by the experience and she gave me this book to read. Once I read the chapters on relationships and love, I became well aware of why our relationship went sour. I had failed to understand the exact psychology and the wonderful differences between men and women and how these differences can be understood and used to compliment your partner. Men and women are absolutely created equal but we are extremely different in many, many ways. It's actually these differences that make men and women so compatible and it was my ignorance to these natural and biological differences that made me lose the girl of my dreams. Don't let this happen to you. We must learn from others' mistakes because there isn't enough time for us to make all of them for ourselves. This book deals with the decisions of finding a college, deciding on a career, understanding the ins and outs of an intimate relationship, and Dr. James Dobson describes in great detail what it REALLY takes to make a relationship last a lifetime. This should be used as a guide for all young adults to live your life for the better in almost every possible way. Dr. James Dobson is a gift from God and he should be taken very seriously. His insight into the young adult psyche is an unmistakable sign that he has been blessed with an ability that most of us need to find within ourselves. We all can learn something from this book, and if we allow our hearts to open up to the goodness of God, we can live our lives according to his Will. I lost the woman that I loved, and then I discovered Dr. James Dobson's book "Life on the Edge." I honestly believe that if I had known then what I know now, I could've avoided this tragedy and I would be getting married to the women of my dreams. I can only hope that she reads this and recognizes herself in my sincere message. Friendship, trust, respect, admiration, and understanding are all very necessary to the growth and nourishment of a life long and loving relationship. Trust me, read this book and you will be transformed into a new [better] person. God bless Dr. James Dobson and God bless women everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing book, July 14, 2007

You cannot beat this book for a teen or twenty something who needs advice for getting on the right track. While James Dobson is a traditional religious writer I feel that this book is down to earth enough to appeal to the intended age group. It is not judgemental. It just explains the benefits of making good choices. It also gives the information necessary to make good choices. It is so harsh that it would turn off a person who may not be as religious as the usualy Dobson reader. Excellent reading and excellent advice. Could also be useful for older readers as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't believe it!, February 11, 2001

This review is from: Life on the Edge (Hardcover)
I started reading this book in the middle of a relationship with a girl I broke up with last year and am now JUST over. Why did it take me so long? I was VERY stubborn. I didn't want to believe what I read. The idea that this exciting feeling of "love" I was feeling might not be love? But then I went back and read more carefully and took time to think about what it said. My eyes openned! This is a breathtaking book. I carry it with me as a reference. Silly, one might think, but it has served to help many around me (considering I'm in high school). Two of my Christian friends are in a relationship. They are VERY Godly people, but they were having difficulties. One was discontented because she didn't have space. The other was confused because he wasn't getting comunication. I pointed out a few things from this book (mainly the "hand A and hand B" concept conveying space) and they understood their problems. It has helped numerous others and has given me an understanding of the people and situations aroung me. God Bless Dr. Dobson. I'm seeing a young lady now (a new person who apreciates my thinking), and I intend to give this book as a gift. Like someone said earlier-I think this should be required reading for teens everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book to read for teens and beyond, February 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life on the Edge (Hardcover)
I have read this book when I was 13 and again when I was 16. I think that this book is the best resouse (after the Bible) for young adults who face the issue of what to do with their lives. This is THE survival guide for teens. It helpes you not to mess up in you teen years, and to build a Christ centered life, that will "go the distance". This is a MUST read for 16-26 (and around that age group). This book has set my life in the direction that God wants me to go. It really changed my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life on the Edge for Graduates, October 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Life on the Edge (Hardcover)
If you are college bound this book is a great choice for you! It gives specific guidelines to help you find a career, pursuit, purpose and mate. Dr. Dobson helps you by giving you tips on decision making, especially tough ones in your future. If you are struggling with any of these issues you should pick up this book and read it! Dr. Dobson is a great Christian author who ties Jesus Christ into all of his sections of this book. This especially is a great book for Christians because they can really relate to what the author is talking about, but it is good for non-Christians or non-religious people as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who is making important decisions in thier life, particularly ones for thier future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, But Dated, May 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've been using this book...chapter by chapter...for discussions with my twin grandsons. 90% of the material is timeless...and as important as ever to discuss with boys turning into young men. There is nothing in the book about the internet, or texting, or cell phones...but that can be handled in a couple of good discussions. Each chapter seems to have a few nuggets or gems that make it worthwhile. My grandsons seems to respect and appreciate its content. They get $10 from me for every chapter read and followed by a 30 minute discussion. It's worth it to me to motivate them. I'm not sure they would do it without the bribe...but it always seems--following each talk--that they are glad we did it. There may be a more up to date book like this out there...but I don't know what it is. I've told the boys, "There are two ways to learn. One is to experiment and make mistakes...some of them huge. The other is to listen to the voice of experience." Dr. Dobson's book contains the voice of experience regarding the process of maturing while avoiding life's pitfalls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful information for my future, October 30, 2001
By
Dianna Willis (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This book by James Dobson, gave a lot of good adivice that is and will be useful in graduating high school and moving on in life. It talks about choosing a career, choosing a "life-time love", and also your purpose in life. This book is full of valuable information that everyone should read about. I can only say positive things about this book. I can't think of anything that I would change about it. It gave me inspiration about what my future holds for me and also gave me logical advice which I will take to heart. Like I said, everything was
positive about this book and I encourage every high school student to read it.
