This review is from: Life on the Edge (Cool Science) (Paperback)
I read this book aloud to my boys (ages 9 and 12). It was better than most science books as a reading experience to enjoy together.
The book gives a tour of some of earth's harshest habitats -- not just hot, cold, or dark, but also salty, toxic or irradiated. Each page has photo illustrations, and the book has an overall modern feel to it. I had actually expected more pictures of extreme animals, but I didn't miss them. I was very satisfied with the interesting text and the vivid photos of habitats and of things in the microscope. The book has quite a few technical words, which would be a challenge for a struggling reader. But the author does a great job of explaining the words and concepts in ways that are easy to understand. We plan on buying more books by the author. |
