I Love This CD!,

(note: this was originally written on amazon.co.uk by ME, and this is an exact copy of the one on co.uk, excluding this small note here)Why haven't you already bought this CD already? What has attracted you to this CD in the first place? Well Dope are pretty big over in the US, and they damn well deserve to be big over here! You might have heard their track Debonair on the Fast & The Furious soundtrack or the Scream 3 soundtrack, or alternatively you might have heard their cover of Dead Or Alive's 80's classic You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)! Well neither of these tracks or on this album, but this album doesn't need these great tracks, as the songs on it already are class! Let's run them through shall we? Take Your Best Shot: Opens with a Barney (yes Barney), doing his little sing song, then gun shots, and a little kiddie telling us exactly what they think of Barney...... Pure class already! Then all of a sudden the music explodes and we have one of the best openers on a CD ever! The song is about taking your best shot in life, and just doing all you can! Now Or Never: First single of the album, and it has some awesome riffs to it that will leave you hooked, not to forget an un-forgettable chorus! Nothing (Why): One of my many fav tracks on this album, but this song really stands out! None of the foul-mouthed language in it, that you'd expect, but rather lyrics coming straight from Edel Dope's heart, about him and his girl having nothing together, so why bother? Stop: Fast paced track, that would work perfectly on a dance floor, but still keeps Dope's heavyness, and an awesome track! Thanks For Nothing: What can I say about this track? Well apart from IT ROCKS! As you can see from the title the chorus is exactly that, and the song is based on that ideaology! I love the lyrics, and personally it suits my view of the world! Die MF Die: The song that made me first check out Dope. The M stands for Mother and the F stands for...... well you know what it stands for! Absolute top, and will annoy neighbours/parents/passers bys with the high impact, crushing riffs and the very foul-mouthes chorus! Move It: Check out Stop for this one! But this track isn't remotely like Stop, but has those kind of quality's about it! Jenny's Cryin': Ok-ish track. Not the best on the album, but better than everything else on the market today! With Or Without You: OH MY GOD!!! I dont know why, but I feel like Edsel must have been listening to U2 when he wrote this! Emotional lyrics, and a tune that will stay with you until you die....... BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!! Slipping Away: Second single off the album, and yet another blinder! Awesome tune, and once again emotional lyrics, create a tune that when most people hear it, will want to know who sung it! Class! March Of Hope: A track to sing along to, and as the title suggests, to march to as well! Should be our national anthem lol! Your So Full Of Sh't: Bonus track, and once again another top tune! Dope have influences ranging from Heavy Metal music from the 80s to a bit of White Zombie mixed with bands such as Limp Bizkit & KoRn, but totally stand out as musicians in their own right! They've created a sound of thier own, and they are well worth checking out! I also recommend their debut album Felons & Revolutionaires which contains other great songs such as Wake Up, Debonair & the master track Kimberly's Ghost! BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

i have just heard this album and i thought it was much better than the first one which i thought was not so good. i dont know why people dont like this group all becuase of all the things tripp eisen had to say about him. i think it has nothin to do what people say it is all about what the music is all about.so i would have to give this review a 4 star for him not listening to other crap that has been going on.

The Definitive Review Part II,

I won't be on my soapbox as much as I was last time. It seems that I pretty much agree with the general concensus on this album. I thought it was a great sophmore effort. It wasn't quite as dark or grungy as "Felons," but it showed off the rest of their talents and what they as a band are capable of. And just a quick note to all those who keep saying that this isn't real "hardcore," and that this is weak, I just have a quick question: Did it ever occur to any of you geniuses that maybe Dope never meant for themselves to be put in the same category as slayer, deicide, downset, or other groups that simply see how heavy they are capable of playing, all while disregarding the amount of quality music that gets lost in the process? You want hardcore, check out Chimaira and back off, because you obviously don't know that there exists several different categories in music, and especially in this genre. One Love

A lot of what I look for in good bands I find in Dope. There are a couple of spots where the lyrics are kind of cheesy but that is overshadowed by the power of it's content. This album is necessary to round out a good metal collection.

I like that the band is very patriotic and they are a group that still writes songs about very personal subjects that almost anyone can relate to. I enjoyed the style that they expressed their opinions as opposed to their other album. I would recomend this CD to anyone else. Grace CS112

Some people say Dope's bad for you. Some say it's good. Others don't mind it. Well, the ones who think it's bad for you $uck, the ones that say it's good rule, and the others have never heard of it. Yes, Dope is back, with a new lineup and a new sound, making it a definite for you collection. If you've never heard Dope (most people haven't), you MUST check them out. They're a really good band, but don't judge them by "Felons And Revolutionaries", no, judge them by "Life".1.Take Your Best Shot-5/5-A positive song about reaching for your dreams and not taking $h!t from anyone. The shortest song on the album, at 2:47, but timing $ucks. 2.Now Or Never-5/5-The album's first single. This is one of the softest, and has really good lyrics. 3.Nothing (Why)-4/5-Not the best song, the lyrics aren't that great, and the verses really down it. But, I still like it. 4.Stop-5/5-One of my favorites. Fast, loud, and kick-"butt". Very catchy. 5.Thanks For Nothing-4/5-This is a weird song...it's hard to describe. It's very fast (of course), but it just sounds weird. 6.Die MF Die-4/5-Yeah, let's dedicate this one to Mr. Laden. The heaviest on the album. It sounds like something from "Felons & Revolutionaries". 7.What About...-4/5-This song sounds a lot like #3. The lyrics dumb it down and so does the verses. The chorus is good, though. 8.Move It-5/5-"Daddy, when I grw up, I wanna be a topless dancer, so I can make lots of cash" is the starting sentence on this strip-club based sex anthem. It's all about havin' a good time. 9.Jenny's Cryin'-3/5-This is kind of a boring song. The lyrics are good, but I just don't like it for some reason. 10.With Or WIthout You-5/5-One of my favorites. It's definetly the most melodic, he11, it starts out with a piano at the beginning. Very touching. 11.Crazy-0/5-There's always one of those songs... 12.Slipping Away-4/5-The beginning reminds me of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but then again, what dosen't?? Everything sounds like that to me! This, Nickelback's "Just For", Cold's "Give"...Oh, sorry, off the subject. This is the album's second single. I like it. Don't love it. I like it. 13.March Of Hope-5/5-My favorite song on the album, and like "Move It" you can party to it. If you go about 4:00 minutes into the song, another song starts. :). The bottom line is: Get this Cd, support Dope, and try to get Acey Slade back in the band. (He quit and joined Murderdolls or something like that."

"nu-metal" this is not,
By A Customer
This review is from: Life (Audio CD)
This album barely fits the definition of "nu-metal" (i.e. stuff with guitars that your girlfriend doesn't mind listening to). The main thing that seperates this album from Stinkin Park and the like is the fact that these can write RIFFS! Remember those things? From way back in the day, before 7-string guitars, rapping vocals, tuning down ridiculously low, and screaming and whining about your parents' divorce came along and ruined rock music? Yeah, THOSE riffs... There's also some attempts at singing on this CD, unlike the monotone whine of clean vocals in most of today's rock music (deftones, korn, and all of their clones). And when the singing does get aggressive, Edsel doesn't sound like Marilyn Manson singing underwater anymore. I read some reviewers bitching about the fact that this band has lost their anger... well, my advice is to get over it... there's plenty of "angry" music for sexually frustrated teenagers out there, just tune in to MTV and you'll find it. Real fans of metal know that there's more to making aggressive music than screaming and bitching constantly.

A Different Sound and Attitude, but still Pretty Good,
By Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life (Audio CD)
I admit that the first time that I listened to this album, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping it would be as heavy and angry as their first album, "Felons and Revolutionaries." Then, I listened to "Life" a couple more times and I started to realize that it was a pretty good album. Is there still anger? Yes, to some degree. I think that the group has matured more from their first album. Also, I guess there’s a new line up, so of course some things are going to change on this new album. I like the lyrics, the singing, and the musical talent these guys have to offer. They blend in metal with industrial music. I admit I do like the attitude change, instead of every song trying to say that life (...), people (...), cops (...), and so on. Especially after the September 11th tragedy, their attitudes towards cops have changed and there are no more "F--- tha Police" and "Pig Society" songs. I think all of the songs are good, except for "Move It." I think that song should’ve been left off. Other than that, the album’s got a great sound to it. I still think their first album is the best and although I don’t mind them not being as angry their first album, I wish some of the songs were a little more heavier. If you’re expecting the same kind of work that was done on "Felons and Revolutionaries," you may be in for a disappointment. If you go in with an open mind and listen to the album a few times, chances are that you might like it. It’s definitely worth listening to. Although their attitudes and sound have changed just a bit, it’s great to know that Dope is a great metal-industrial band that hasn’t sold out. |
