The warning on the label cautions the patient that high-dosage Vitamin D3 might cause all sorts of health problems. It advises monthly blood tests to check for serum 25(OH)D in the danger level. I am happy to report that for way more than 99% of the population, 5,000 IU will bring you into the optimal range. This warning is the manufacturer's way of limiting legal liability in case something goes wrong, but it basically is safe. 5,000 IU typically brings a blood level of 15 ng/mL up to around 40 ng/mL. You could go three times that high and it would still be safe according to research done by Dr. Reinhold Vieth at the University of Toronto. It's hard to get good Vit D. This is the good stuff. Do your research and realize that this one day may save your life and the life of your family. I haven't had a cold or flu this year because I daily take my VitD3 minimums.

I've been using this now for several months and have had no problems with illness. You do need to follow the directions and take it with food.

As a physician specializing in hormone balance (active vitamin D is a actually a hormone) and natural medicine, I would recommend caution in taking 5000 IU of vitamin D3 every day. Although the RDA for this nutrient is too low and vitamin D deficiency is an epidemic in the US (at least 85% of my patients are low, and I test everyone), 5000 IU of D3 every day can lead to toxic levels (biggest concern is increased risk of calcification of soft tissues and kidney stones). Check your 25(OH)Vitamin D level twice a year -- optimal is 40-70.
