Product Description

Size: 60

Vitamin D is synthesized in the body from sunlight. But, due to the winter season, weather conditions, and sunscreen blockers, the body's ability to produce optimal vitamin D levels may be inhibited. In fact, it has been proposed that annual fluctuations in vitamin D levels explain the seasonality of influenza. All of these factors point to the value of taking a daily vitamin D supplement to ensure optimal vitamin D intake

Therefore, those taking Vitamin D3 may also wish to consider taking a good Vitamin K2 supplement such as Life Extension Super K with Advanced K2 Complex.

Studies have shown vitamin D improves symptoms of all kinds of autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis, and that it can relieve the pain of fibromyalgia.

The warning on the label cautions the patient that high-dosage Vitamin D3 might cause all sorts of health problems. It advises monthly blood tests to check for serum 25(OH)D in the danger level. I am happy to report that for way more than 99% of the population, 5,000 IU will bring you into the optimal range. This warning is the manufacturer's way of limiting legal liability in case something goes wrong, but it basically is safe. 5,000 IU typically brings a blood level of 15 ng/mL up to around 40 ng/mL. You could go three times that high and it would still be safe according to research done by Dr. Reinhold Vieth at the University of Toronto. If everyone took 5,000 IU of D3 the world would be far healthier. Disclosure: I am not connected to this company except as a customer, I do not sell vitamins, and I am not a health professional.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading Vitamin D3 supplements: Nutrigold Vitamin D3 Gold, Doctor's Best Vitamin D3 5000iu, Now Foods Vitamin D3, Life Extension Vitamin D3, Nature Made Vitamin D-3, Nature's Bounty Vitamin D3, Thorne Research D-5,000, Schiff Mega D3, and Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3.

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It is used, alone or in combination with calcium, to increase bone mineral density and decrease fractures. Recently, research also suggests that vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Sun exposure is an easy, reliable way for most people to get vitamin D. Exposure of the hands, face, arms, and legs to sunlight two to three times a week for about one-fourth of the time it would take to develop a mild sunburn will cause the skin to produce enough vitamin D. The necessary exposure time varies with age, skin type, season, time of day, etc.

People who don't get enough sun, especially people living in Canada and the northern half of the US, are especially at risk. Vitamin D deficiency also occurs even in sunny climates, possibly because people are staying indoors more, covering up when outside, or using sunscreens consistently these days to reduce skin cancer risk.

Older people are also at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

i took 25,000 IUs in the morning and again at night
for about two months. had a sty in the eye for 30
years that went away. had a welt on my back for 30
years that just about went away. and it made me feel
great, also.

the normal blood test range for D is 30-60, and my
blood tested at 150. calcium was a bit above normal.

so now i am down to only 5000 iu every two or three
days.

the high level was not damaging because i have good
kidneys. D gets stored in many places so i will have
plenty to last me though the winter - it is late spring
now. i'm glad i stopped the mega-dosing before something
happened to my kidneys - but who knows, maybe i could have
gone for more months and become young and perfect again.

if your kidneys are good, i recommend mega-doses (50K) of
D3 for a month or so. but not longer - just until it
reverses a few of those chronic conditions that most
people have.

i would also strongly suggest MK7-K2 the bio-available
form of Vitamin K2 - this will help your kidneys and i
took this during my mega-dose experiment.

I started taking 5,000 IU per day when I was on the brink of clinical depression in Vancouver, BC, and this product really took me right back to seeing the brighter side of life. I ended up increasing the daily dose to 10,000 which seems to work a lot better. I also used to feel really cold all the time, with my fingers and toes being really cold. No more! I can stay outside for hours and actually enjoy it in the middle of the rainy season. I also had a constantly runny nose for years but noticed that I'm getting better in just a few months on this product. My body started craving spinach, carrots and dairy, and through research I later realized that I need to supplement with vitamin K, vitamin A and calcium as these are essential when using higher doses of D3. I highly recommend this product to anyone with even the slightest depression.

It's hard to get good Vit D. This is the good stuff. Do your research and realize that this one day may save your life and the life of your family. I haven't had a cold or flu this year because I daily take my VitD3 minimums.

Vitamin D3 is the most bioavailable form of vitamin D, which is well known by both alternative and mainstream medical practitioners to have bone-protective properties. I use this particular brand because the company is highly reputable.

There are varying opinions on how much D3 to take. As you can see, this product is 5000 IU. My own alternative healthcare provider has vacillated over the years between recommending a dose of 1000 IU per day, to 2000 IU, to the 5000 IU of this product. I personally take between 1000 - 5000 IU per day depending on the time of year. Regarding a potential danger of overdose of vitamin D, the body itself produces up to 20,000 IU of vitamin D after just 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure in the summer, with no ill effects. However, for those embarking on a dosage of more than 1000 IU daily, ideally you would do it with a doctor's supervision, having the doctor regularly test your blood levels of vitamin D. Your doctor can test them by ordering a lab to do the 25-hydroxy vitamin D test, abbreviated as "25(OH)D." This is touted as the most reliable test of vitamin D status. Optimal levels range between 50 and 70 ng/mL

Of course, if you are willing to allow a few minutes of sun exposure in the summer, you can get all the vitamin D you need that way during that time of year. However, in the winter, the angle of the sun is such that if you don't live quite near the equator, the body produces inadequate vitamin D when exposed to the sun--not to mention that very little of the skin is exposed to the sun when it is severely cold outside. Research has discovered that Americans as a whole are dangerously deficient in vitamin D, especially during winter months. The body's ability to produce vitamin D naturally also declines with age.
