This is a great series, and the Elementary books are great. I've used Right Start Math as well as a Math Through Literature program, and my children have liked Life of Fred the best. It is also simpler to use...no preparation is necessary, and a lot of information is passed through the fun story in each chapter. There are just a few questions to be answered at the end of each chapter which my 6 year old had very little trouble with, though they did make her think, and helped her understand what the math symbols mean, even helped with her handwriting, days of the week, etc. I like that Life of Fred helps us understand the concepts solidly without needing to pull out all of the manipulatives.

I've learned that (my children at least) form some dependence on hands on manipulatives and have trouble switching to the abstract, or just knowing it...and these books have helped with that transition. The best part was that my children ASK to do math with this and will sit down and concentrate on the questions on their own...even getting upset if they are interrupted.

This set is a good resource. It seems to be cheapest on the Z-Twist website. There are 8 books available right now, and supposed to be 10 total in the elementary series in February 2012.

A friend loaned me "Apples" and all of my kids are begging to do math. I have read pleasure books every night to them for years. We got this book 2 weeks ago and this is what they are now begging me to read and doing the math problems. This is not even for school work - they want this for fun!!!

I was certain that my math-averse daughter would never embrace the subject. Thankfully, someone introduced me to Fred and life has improved tremendously in our home as a result. My seven year old is an avid reader and simply loves the format, quirkiness and amount of "work" involved with this series. I love, love, love this series!

My 2nd grader has struggled with math this year. From the 1-2 timed speed drills that his teacher made them do everyday he began to hate math and state that he couldn't do it. We looked for ways to get his excitement back in math. Saxon was not working, so we heard about The Life of Fred series. It has been wonderful. My 2nd grader has completed the first book in the series with my help and we are on to the second book, Butterflies, now. He has actually reread the first book, Apples on his own twice more since we have finished it just because he wanted to read about Fred. This format is a wonderful idea and I would recommend it to anyone struggling in loving math or understanding where it has any affect on us in the everyday world because Life of Fred teaches math thru the everyday life of Fred. Great idea!Life of Fred 4-Book Elementary Set # 1 : Apples, Butterflies, Cats, Dogs

We choose Life of Fred after using Saxon Math and found it a great change...it not only teaches Math but other subjects as well. It is fun and keeps my second grader's attention! It is also "life math" because it is word problems which he will use in the future.

My husband taught math for over 30 years. We are now homeschooling three of our grandchildren and I selected these books for him to use to use for their math. He is very pleased with them and plans to incorporate them into each lesson. I purchased the first 4 in the series. It will cover a span of two years.

We have tried so many different math curriculums throughout the years. I recently purchased these for my youngest because he was struggling with reading and he loves Math. I have friends who rave about Life of Fred and have been for years. Well, now i know what all the hype was about. He is loving these books! The questions at the end of each chapter really make him think and use his reasoning skills. He is learning reading, and some grammar, science and other things as well. These books are fabulous! He could have started much higher up, but we chose to start from the beginning. He's zipping through them, but having a ball!
We can't say enough great things about Life of Fred now. We will be sticking with his and ordering more.
My only disappointment is that I didn't listen sooner and order these for my older kids when they were younger.

My 5 year old son loves this set. (Even my 3 year old daughter likes to listen in.) He asks for it every day and reads it by flashlight at night.
I like how it throws in easy variables right from the start so that algebra is a natural part of math, not a foreign language. I also enjoy that Fred prays and knows scripture, relating even this part of our lives with numbers instead of the classic science vs. religion myth.
The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because sometimes it seems like it's trying to cram too much information into one story, like the bits on the English language or the morse code in "Dogs". Life of Fred is a valuable part of my children's math education, but for English, we'll stick to English classics.
