Book Description

November 7, 2000
Mark Girouard, author of Life in the English Country House and other superb books, extends his realm to France in this perceptive and witty portrait of the upper classes at home in their châteaux, manoirs, and gentilhommières.
In these lavishly illustrated pages we experience all the variety and beauty of the châteaux. We learn how they reflected, in their decoration and organization, the manners and mores of their occupants--how the different rooms were lived in, how changes in taste accommodated the waxing and waning fortunes of the aristocracy (and then the bourgeoisie), how design and architecture evolved to serve changing lifestyles and values.
The grim fortified donjons of old developed into the extravagant towers in which late-medieval seigneurs lived in luxury and splendor. In the time of Francis I and his successors, the romance of chivalry infused with Renaissance culture: the pageantry of balls and masques in the grande salle, the cultivation of privacy in richly decorated cabinets and galleries. In the ancien régime, the château offered intimate conversations in seventeenth-century alcoves, amorous encounters in Louis Quinze boudoirs, the pleasures of private theatricals, and the refined social life of the salon. After the Revolution, the noblesse returned to its medieval roots, but brought old values up to date with plush upholstered sofas, potted palms, and parks in the English manner. Seriousness was diluted by the extravagant entertainments of the Belle Epoque, and in our own time nostalgia combines with a dogged fight for survival.
Mr. Girouard is as a marvelous guide to "downstairs" as he is to "upstairs," showing us how the kitchens operated, how the stables were organized, how the servants were provided for, as well as how developments in lighting, plumbing, and water supply affected everyone's comfort and customs. He has explored scores of French houses, as well as the letters and diaries, inventories, and books of etiquette that give us an intimate sense of what it meant to inhabit a French country house.
For everyone who has visited or dreamed of the French countryside, this endlessly appealing book will bring to life that storied place and its people.

With 200 photographs and illustrations, nearly all in full color

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With scholarship and style, Girouard turns from England (Life in the English Country House) to France. Not a study of royal residences, sculptured gardens, or interior design, this look into life in the ch teaux and manoirs over the past six centuries is architecture as social history. The author investigates the development of lifestyles and the settings in which they flourished, from the grand salon to the boudoir, from the separate "downstairs" world to the courtyard. From the nobility to the petit bourgeoisie, the landed gentry to the nouveau riche, the country house was, and remains, an important sign of status and taste. The extravagant house parties, the large private family gatherings, outings in the newly invented motor cars, and the marvelous introduction of indoor plumbing, all these and more are depicted with expertise and elegance. If entry into these marvelous buildings is only for the elect, this work allows the reader a fine look behind the fa ade and into the life behind the fences and hedges. Recommended for larger public libraries.DPaula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

From Booklist

The author of the immensely popular Life in the English Country House (1978) moves across the English Channel, expertly scrutinizing the chateaux and seigneurial residences that adorn the French countryside. Girouard explores a multitude of stunning manoirs, providing insightful commentaries detailing the many ways in which these homes were utilized and lived in from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. Since most of these buildings were specifically designed to reflect the status and the ambitions of their owners, informative cultural and structural evaluations are also included. Brimming with sumptuous illustrations, this delightful social and architectural history will appeal to a broad cross section of serious scholars and casual browsers. Margaret Flanagan

5.0 out of 5 stars expectations gratified, December 5, 2000

What a delightful surprise to learn that Mark Girouard has written about France. I have enjoyed his books about English houses and towns for years -- returned to them again and again. His new book on the French country house has delighted me with the same mix of historical knowledge with social insight and architectural connoisseurship. All his books are full of the most interesting insights and details, and he writes like and angel. Nice pictures too. (My only wish is for more pictures, plans and diagrams.) This books is a lovely equal to his "Life in the English Country House."

4.0 out of 5 stars a few errors, but overall exemplary, May 16, 2011
This review is from: Life in the French Country House (Hardcover)
This book is generally terrific--wonderful photographs, great anecdotes about particular personages and events, an impressive breadth of historical knowledge. That said, if you are using this book for historical research instead of just general interest, double-check your findings; for example, Girouard has the French Estates General meeting in 1618 instead of 1614. A few paragraphs later, Louis XIII is escorting the Queen of Poland to a play in 1645--a difficult feat, considering he died two years earlier. I noticed these things only because I am familiar with that particular time period, so it makes me wonder what other minor details might be incorrect throughout the book. But that's an emphasis on "minor," and I don't intend to harp on it. Overall I think this is an incredible resource with lots of fascinating information. I got my copy from the library, but I'll probably buy one for myself--I can see myself referring back to it often!

If you are interested in architecture, this book gives you a fascinating perspective on the use of houses, buildings and property as well as how people lived in French country houses. The book traces French country houses back to the Middle Ages and brings one up to current times, with an explication of how houses changed to meet standards of the times.
