4.0 out of 5 stars Despite Initial Problem, Kit is what it says
OK, let me get the problems out of the way first.

Like many people, my kit was also missing the Life Essentials pack. What did I do? I emailed LifeGear. They wrote me back within a couple of hours, apologized, and then proceeded to send me not only the Life Essentials pack, but an extra flashing emergency light and another crank radio. The backpack seems nice, and the tiny little soap would surely come in handy for something, but the main items I was interested in were not in the backpack. The description has all of these items listed as included, but they were not. The "Life Essentials" part was completely missing - no food or water rations. The leather gloves, mirror, waterproof document bag, and mask were also missing. I purchased two of these at the same time, and one of them also had a broken compass on top of these other missing items. That was a pretty expensive yellow backpack, tiny soap, and bandaids.

Amazon is going to send a replacement, but they cannot guarantee that it will not be missing the same things next time. Frustrating to have to make trips to the Post Office with kids....which is the reason I shop on Amazon in the first place.

I received them about 3 days later. I also got another email from them asking if they arrived and if they could do anything else for me. Problem solved.

Some have complained about the compass. It's nothing to write home about. I agree. Personally, I always have a couple of compasses and would never rely solely on something that came as part of a kit. It is a back up at best. Still, it could have been better.

Finally, the next big complaint seems to be that a person could put together a comparable or even better kit by themselves piece by piece and even save some money. OF COURSE YOU COULD! Did you not look to see what was included in the kit before you bought this? Did you not do a little checking and find out that you could, indeed, make your own for cheaper? How on earth someone could rate down the product for including what it says it includes for the price listed. You knew this going in. You either knew this ahead of time and still bought it, in which case, why are you complaining? Or you didn't bother to look into the product descriptions before you bought it, in which case, duh.

Oh well. I am giving it four stars. It might have been three stars had I not received such great service after the purchase, but maybe still four. The backpack itself it pretty nice. A good size with room for quite a bit. It is sturdy and comfortable enough. The items inside are better than in some kits I have seen and worse than a couple. For the most part, however, prebuilt kits do not boast the highest quality items (and a little search on google reveals this).

Again, yes, you can put one of these together yourself and save some money. But don't discount the value of simply getting SOMETHING. I actually bought this as a supplemental kit that I needed in a hurry and one that I didn't want to spend time putting together. I swapped a few items out and might add a few more. But ultimately, complain about the missing stuff (though you could just email them and probably get it fixed), complain about the quality of some item in the kit (but don't expect great quality in a prebuilt kit), but don't complain that the kit came with what it said it would come with and cost what it said it would cost.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not have anything promised!!, May 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I ordered this before reading the other reviews. After I read them I was tempted to cancel, but decided to chance it as I've never had any problems with Amazon before. My item arrived today and the ONLY item promised on the description page that was included was the whistle/compass/thermometer. And the compass did not work at all. I'm returning this tomorrow. I'd recommend purchasing a different product or from a different source.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time to be prepared, December 5, 2007

We bought this product along with Life+Gear Essentials. Life+Gear Life Essentials #LGLE01 We also bought the Eton Crank radio Eton FR400 Hand Crank Radio and Power Generator (Red)
We live in earthquake and fire prone California and feel you can't be too careful. We keep all of our gear by the front door in a closet along with important papers so we can just grab and go. This is a high quality kit and I believe it will serve us well should we ever need it. Call me nervous but just as in my Girl Scout days, I like to be prepared.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price and missing food/water!, March 26, 2008
This review is from: Life+Gear LGSBPK01 Wings of Life Backpack without Life Essentials (Tools & Home Improvement)
Product was missing food and water (life essentials). Also the items it did come with were very cheap. For instance the first aid kid hardly contained anything (isnt this the most important besides the food and water?). In fact you could buy all the items that come with this pack for under $15 at walmart. Basically you're paying for well made backpack which is the only good thing I can say about this overpriced life-saver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Flexible!, February 16, 2009
This review is from: Life+Gear LGSBPK01 Wings of Life Backpack without Life Essentials (Tools & Home Improvement)
Although I originally bought this backpack to use in emergency situations (I live in LA, a.k.a earthquake country), I actually ended up using it as my everyday pack when I bike to school. The pack itself is very comfortable and the inside is super roomy. It is water-resistant which is great for us bikers in the rainy season, and it comes with an emergency red flasher which has me served very well in those late night rides home. All in all, the pack is very flexible and works well for emergency home use or everyday outdoor use. This is the third LifeGear product that I own (I also bought the LifeEssentials and the LifeLight) and I plan to buy more from this company if they continue to release such consistently high-quality and low-cost products.

This is an excellent backpack. Would be ideal for a survival kit to keep in your car/truck/cabin/home, etc. Most everything you need, including food and water, are included in this well-designed pack.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice but could make your own, March 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Although the backpack itself is interesting most of the items included could be bought separately or made by yourself for a lesser price. It does not come with any food or water and what is in it is helpful but you make them yourselves. If you live in a hurricane area like I do, this would not really help you much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for work or car, November 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Life+Gear LGSBPK01 Wings of Life Backpack without Life Essentials (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a great back-up kit to keep in your trunk or desk at work. It has almost everything you will need for up to three days of isolation in the event of a natural or man-made disaster that keeps you from getting home. It has most of the basics you'll need, but a few items are conspicuous in their absence, a flashlight chief among them. I supplemented mine with a headlamp and a portable am/fm radio, and extra batteries for each. It's nice because it also has plenty of storage space for a change of clothes and a pair of sturdy walking shoes, and whatever other items you want to add to it. All in all, it's a pretty good deal, and it takes most of the guesswork out of putting together an emergency kit from scratch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best survival starter kit for the $$$!, September 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Life+Gear LGSBPK01 Wings of Life Backpack without Life Essentials (Tools & Home Improvement)
High quality backpack to start. Lot of pockets and features like padding, quality zippers, exterior netted pockets. Food & water are NOT included in this kit, thats why the price is so reasonable. The items are packed in plain view in wings to get to quickly, love that. The hygiene kit includes- colgate tooth paste & brush, soap, tissue, comb, & shampoo. There is also a 6 page emergency pamplet with helpful contacts, optional items to purchase for your kit as well as disaster tips. Thick leather gloves and a water proof document/matches bag both good quality are inside.
Not all the items are of the highest quality, but there all included so you dont have to hunt and peck yourself. I like the variety of the items included, as now I can add other items and choose the quality of them myself. In an emergency or survival situation your not going to care if the whistle is plastic, only that it blows. And if I'm cut or injured, I'll be happy with the sterile bandaids as long as they stick! They left plenty of room to add other items ideal for your situation or use. I have added a survival knife, red cross fr160 emergency radio, flint, rope and other basic survival items. The only option that would be nice is other color combinations, red/black, blue/black,etc. I would highly recommend this item to all. my pack arrived with everything as listed (if it don't, contact amazon, their customer service is #1) and once again another GREAT purchase from Amazon, THANKS!!
