Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This is full-frontal Ginuwine. The Life has 15 crisp and clean tracks, three ballads, two mercifully brief interludes, and, praises be, only one guest appearance. With the exception of one or two tracks, the album's subject matter crystallizes Ginuwine's shiny digitized persona: the iced-out, ghetto-down-yet-sensitive, pretty-boy player with a pocket full of money. As a flesh-and-blood artist, Ginuwine is a reasonably talented, trend-conscious love man with the ability to turn fairly ordinary songs about two-way pagers, g-strings, and the myriad pressures of being a hard-working sex symbol into Billboard-bound hits. Even though he focuses on adult topics, Ginuwine's songs seem to center around the type of fantasies 15-year-olds indulge in while watching MTV on a school night. Five of these tracks are up-tempo rump shakers and 10 are turbo-charged, up-on-the-downstroke slow jams. The party songs are cluttered with drum and bass, whistles, mediocre Spanish guitars, and other gimmicks that merely distract from Ginuwine's capable midrange vocals. Stick with the slick slow jams, and he might just get your heart racing. --Rebecca Levine

4.0 out of 5 stars Ginuwine strikes again, April 10, 2001
By Tony_Tone "Anthony Jamal Smith" (Washington, D.C., District of Columbia United States) - See all my reviews
After two CDs under his belt, Ginuwine release his third and his best CD of his career so far in my opinion.. You may ask why this one is better then his previous two.. He shows a lot of maturity on this cd not only lyrically but musically.. For the first time working with a wider range of producers Timbaland is on board for one track That's How I Get Down with a little help from Ludacris this song is one of the highlites.. The track is vintage Timbaland .. The best moments on the Cd however in my opinion are the ballads 2 Way produced by Raphael Saadiq of Tony Toni Tone fame this song remind me of a song that Tony Toni Tone could have done it has that type of feel written all over the song.. Differences which is the best of the ballads on the CD the song deals with Ginuwine telling the young lady that his playing days is over that he found that special some one that he wants to spend his life with.. Other highlites on the CD Open Arms, Why Did You Go, Tribute To Women, Role Playing.. Show After The Show the best of the uptempo cuts on the CD, There It Is .. There is also a very touching tribute to his mother and father The Reason I Cry beautifully written song.. A pretty good CD should be in your collection fan of Ginuwine or just a fan of R&b this is a must for your collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best, May 7, 2001
By Catina Mercer (Greenvile, NC) - See all my reviews
Ginuwine's "The Life" was a great albulm. So what if Timbaland produced only one song. Sometimes an artist wants to try different sounds therefore goes to different producers. On top of that a person's life reflects his or her music. Ginuwine's obviously been through some things in his life. He's telling about it while laying down some hot tracks at the same time. And Ginuwine has matured since his other two albums; you can tell by the different lyrics in his songs. I welcome that maturity. There should be more men who are not afraid to tell how they feel about their woman. What caught my attention to buy the CD was "There It Is". It's soulful and you can still dance to it. My favorite songs are "2 way", "Differences", and "Tribute to a Woman". The whole album is nothing but the hotness. I plan to look for even better albums from Ginuwine in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars This IS the life, February 27, 2003
People need to stop sleeping on Ginuwine. This is his third album, and on each one of his albums he's had at least one standout single that everyone likes. So wouldn't it make sense for people to check out the album?

Basically this album showcases G doing the kind of things we expect to hear. "There It Is" shows his attitude, getting fed up with his girl not appreciating all the things he does for her. "Tribute To A Woman" is pretty self-explanatory and is sure to win him some more female fans, and we're all familiar with the hit song "Differences", which basically talks about how much in love he is with his woman (although I'm not sure why the song is called "Differences").

But things don't always stay on the happy side. "Two Reasons I Cry" is a painful but still good song about Ginuwine missing his parents (FYI: they both died in the same year). But there are also more positive songs like the creative "Role Play", which you'll probably want the kids out of the room for. Even Diane Warren's slighty sappy "Superhuman" is a highlight.

If "2 Way" and "So Fine" weren't on this album, I wouldn't miss them. Still, this is another addition to the list of great Ginuwine albums. There's no need to ignore it any more; pick it up. And get his other two albums, too, while you're at it.
