5.0 out of 5 stars These books are an APOLOGIA in evolution, May 3, 2008
This review is from: A Life-Giving Vision: How to Be a Christian in Today's World (Paperback)
I have read all his books and I have read the media statements about sexual abuse from the 60's and 70's, that surfaced in 2002.
For the discerning reader, these writings take on a deeper meaning in the light of these recent revelations and reflect the insights individual in the process of growth as an incomplete fraction of a human being.
Masculine, joining the Priesthood at the "tender age of 17" in an era of Victorian repression, journeying thru the confusion of the liberalism of the 1960s and 70s - this is a man of his time, an man who has sinned, a man who has hurt, asked for forgiveness, a man who has grown and who has written a travelogue of his own psychosexual development as an APOLOGIA, rich in insight and throbbing painful humanity.
Who are we to judge? That the funding of overseas Jesuit Missions from the sales of his books have plumetted from the revelation of 'scandal' of old - is this not a worse outcome for humanity, when the readership of his writings and insights with proceeds of sales, has done so much good for so many.

Read his books and learn what it is to be a growing incomplete human, an Augustine and take note of Padre Pio's personal advice to this now frail and suffering elderly man.

"let those of you who have not sinned cast the first stone" and look at the "bigger picture" please.
A towering intellect. A Man for all Seasons, but above all a self confessed MAN and a frail HUMAN.
Read & BUY!.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Numinous Book, March 2, 2010
By
This review is from: A Life-Giving Vision: How to Be a Christian in Today's World (Paperback)
Filled with colorful and beautiful illustrations that help to evoke its themes, this book is a refreshing journey that guides one in developing a worldview of love, openness, hope, joy, and growth. The emphasis is on the importance of focusing on what is good, being a "goodfinder" who looks for the positive in situations, orienting one's awareness toward the blessings of life rather than focusing on complaint and darkness. Looking toward the joy and beauty of God's world helps take our gaze away from inward focus on our problems, "dying to self" as we begin to participate with God in loving and blessing the world around us. This sustains us on a path as we move through our days into an ever-increasing awareness and gratitude, and the eventual full realization of Heaven.

I found this book to be like meditating while looking through a sunlit stained-glass window. Simply reading it was restorative. I am keeping it on my shelf to re-read whenever I need a lift.
