Much of Greece is covered by mountains. This made it hard to travel around by land in ancient times. But Greece is also surrounded by sea on three sides, and has many islands around the mainland. So the sea was always important to the ancient Greeks. They traveled by sea as much as they could. This meant they needed harbors to land in. Some of these harbors grew into ports places where ships came from all over ancient Greece. Ports were especially useful to traders, because they could meet there to trade.

Grade 2-4–All three titles discuss homes, occupations, food, leisure, clothing, and building structures, and include a recipe. Chapter spreads include a main paragraph in large-print text, a color-blocked sidebar, and full-color illustrations and photos of artifacts. Vocabulary is easy, and glossary terms appear in bold. Children will find these selections useful for reports. Information is very basic, but there's enough to give a flavor for the culture and to spark further interest. The lists for further reading, with rare exception, refer to other books published by Heinemann. We are studying Ancient Greece and this book series is excellent in showing what life was like for the Greeks. There are even fun recipes to try to really experience life as a Greek.
