5.0 out of 5 stars Trout's Best CD!!, June 30, 2004

I have just about all of Trout's CD's, and they're all at least good, some very good, but this one from 1989 is the best, hands down. "Red House" is a spectacular shred-fest (I think Jimi would have liked it), and his tunes are catchy and well-written. His singing is superior on this album than on his more recent releases, in my opinion--he sounds like he's opening his throat more here, especially on the title track. The sound quality isn't quite as good as his more recent stuff, understandably, since recording methods have drastically improved over the last 15 years, but it's still good quality sound overall--not nearly as bad as on his crappy sounding "Telling Stories" CD--that one badly needs to be remixed.

If you're new to Walter Trout, this is an excellent choice for starting your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Trout CD, December 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Life in the Jungle (Audio CD)
I bought this CD in London in 1992 after hearing Walter on a John Mayall compilation. I have since bought all Walter's CD's. This is one of the best CD's in my whole collection and the range of music (although predominantly Blues-rock) really shows the brilliance of Walter's guitar work and singing. Listen to tracks 6, 9 and 10 and if you are not impressed, you are hard to please. The USA has missed-out on what the rest us have enjoyed for years. Just buy it! GPM

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Guitar, January 10, 2003

I first heard a piece of "Red House" while on vacation in Holland in 1991. I finally found out that it was the "Walter Trout Band" and I now have every cd he has out there. This guy really loves his guitar and he'll make you love it too. Crisp clean rock blues. Great stuff!

This is a must-have album. I rarely write reviews but this album (and Walter Trout) simply cannot be ignored. Walter Trout is among the best guitarists in the world. What he does to his Fender Stratocaster should be outlawed! He effortlessly plays with amazing speed, accuracy and power. Pure and simple, he is a Guitar God, and you will play this album over and over..and loud! With so much trash being passed off as talent and/or rock and roll today, if you are looking for the real deal, then look no further. I grew up in the 60s and 70s with Zeppelin, Stones, Hendrix, Clapton, The Who, etc. and Water Trout is superior to all the lead guitrists from those bands. Yes, I love Jimmy Page and Led Zep, but Walter is better than Jimmy. There may never be another Jimi Hendrix, and with the exception of possibly SRV, I believe Walter Trout is better than any rock guitarist from the 70s and 80s. Eddie Van Halen could have possibly been one of the greats of all time but he wasted his life and is a shell of the rock giant he once was. I've been listening to rock for 40+ years, and with all due respect to the great bands of the 70s and 80s, none of them has/had a guitarist so polished and amazing as Walter Trout. Sure his band won't ever be as great as the super bands of the 70s, but his talent is so amazing it deserves a listen. Buy it and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars great, despite the critics, July 10, 2002
This review is from: Life in the Jungle (Audio CD)
I know the critics might find fault with the new cd by Walter Trout, but what do they know. From a blues listener's point of view, this is a pretty great cd. The "live" tracks, including, Red House and Serve(s) Me Right To Suffer, are outstanding tracks and show Trout's ability to cover the "classics". His own title track is also a blistering blue number. Buy it, ignore the critics. I might also suggest the rest of the Trout catalog(ue).
He "jams".

Walter absolutely tears it up on Red House, Cold Cold Feeling, and Serves Me Right To Suffer. Demonstrates why he is one of the best blues / rock guitarists to ever strap on a Strat. Buy it today! It will quickly become one of your all time favorites!

4.0 out of 5 stars Life in the Jungle, my review from Barcelona (good guitar), November 4, 2007
This review is from: Life in the Jungle (Audio CD)
Since I've listened Walter Trout's "Full Circle" 2006's record, for certain very good, I'm interested in his discography and this "Life In The Jungle" 1990's record I think is his best work in general terms, good Blues songs that you can begin to guess it when listening the open song the good Blues-shuffle "Good enough to eat". Great guitar and very competent rhythm section work all along the record that besides you can imagine it when reading themes as "Red House", "Cold Cold Feeling" and "Serve Me Right To Suffer' three superb Blues.
But, I only find fault finally with "Red House" live cover (it begins very well the six first minutes but a Blues so marvellous like this deserve the gratitude of finishing better, too much pirouettes) and "Serve(s) Me Right To Suffer" live cover, I'm sorry but being good those covers I think they could be fairly better, on the other hand these Blues mentioned before I like very much specially Jimi Hendrix's "Red House" version and "Serve(s) Me Right To Suffer" John Lee Hooker's and J.Geils Band's two versions respectively.
Nevertheless great stuff, there are great Blues in there as "Life in the Jungle", "She's out there somewhere" or "In my mind" , recommended to all guitars followers and also for pirouettes guitar solos followers. I give it from 3,5 stars to 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trout kicks a**!!!, March 8, 2007

Walter Trout has to be one of the most under-appreciated guitarist ever! His soulful playing makes him sound as if he is one with the guitar. Where has this guy been all my life LOL?

4.0 out of 5 stars Crank It Up!, December 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Life in the Jungle (Audio CD)
My introduction to Walter Trout was via John Mayall's cover of the Trout-penned Life In The Jungle. And like the reviewer from New Zealand, I think Mayall's version is superior. That being said, I am glad that Mayall covered it else I might not have gotten to hear the music of Mr. Trout.
Before I bought any Trout recordings, I had the impression through articles I read about him that he is a blues guitarist. Well, he is, but not in the strictest sense. Much of this CD reminds me of the blues-rock of the early Allman Brothers Band. So Trout is as much about rock and roll as he is about the blues.
While the entire CD is pretty good, my favorites are Good Enough To Eat, the title cut, a searing Red House, and the duo of blues drenched tunes that close the album: Cold, Cold, Feeling and Serve Me Right To Suffer.
Life In the Jungle would be a hit at any party where good music is for more than just background noise. If you are one who enjoys the Allman Brothers, older Lynyrd Skynyrd, or even John Mayall, you are bound to like this. So crank it up and enjoy!
