Book Description

FPA PRESIDENT'S BOOK AWARD GOLD MEDAL WINNER
& WINNER OF THE ROYAL PALM LITERARY AWARD

Life in the Land of IS tells the inspiring story of Lani Deauville, a woman the Guinness Book of Records lists as the World's Longest Living Quadriplegic. Lani is also a woman who believes in IS. "Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is yet to be," she says, "but IS is now and it's the truth of reality."

In this beautifully captured memoir, Lani Deauville tells how in one moment of reckless abandon she went from a teenage diving champion to the edge of death and back again. Although destined to spend her remaining days in a wheelchair, Lani insists she wouldn't change one moment of the amazing life that took her from high school dropout to one of the most accomplished and respected rehabilitative professionals in the state of Florida.

Her story is one that will amaze and inspire people from all walks of life and especially those who face such challenges themselves.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I felt like Lani was actually speaking to me and telling me her story vs. it being written by an author. Lani managed to lasso life and make it work for her, always remaining positive, even when faced with some monumental obstacles. Makes one truly wonder about the little pebbles that we consider to be boulders in our lives!  A Book and A Review

Life in the Land of IS truly is an inspirational story of human courage and the power of living in IS moments. I laughed more than I cried and Lani's story touched me. It is the kind of story that stays with you.  The Caffeinated Reviewer

When I first agreed to read this book, knowing that it was about the life of a quadriplegic, I expected a story filled with angst, fighting against the odds, frustration and guilt. Instead what I found was Lani, a woman that is as upbeat and positive as a person can get. Reading Hearts

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind boggling on many fronts March 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It has taken me a little bit to process this review in my head. I finished the book a couple of days ago, yet feel really "blessed" that it came into my life at this particular moment. I also needed time to process the feelings that naturally come with it. I had been in a pretty rough spot and this book just gave me a "things that make you go hmmmm" moment. Although, I am not a religious person, I am a spiritual one, and one can't but help (or at least I can't) the timing of when this book popped up for me. Lani Deauville is a woman who not only overcame a whole new level of adversity that most people cannot even begin to imagine in their lives, she managed to lasso it and make it work for her, always remaining positive, even when faced with some monumental obstacles which came into her life. Makes one truly wonder about the little pebbles that we consider to be boulders in our lives!

My favorite LD quote in the book: "The worst handicap you can have is a lack of belief in yourself!"

The other reason that this was a 5 star read for me was the manner in which it was written was that I felt like Lani was actually speaking to me and telling me her story vs. it being written by an author. Although, it is basically a biography, it is written as though it is a memoir. I don't think the book could pack quite the punch it did for me had it been written as a biography.

Third, I loved this author's work in her book, Spare Change. I have found very few authors can venture out of their comfort zone with genres that they write in. Ms. Crosby has done this beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars kind of story that stays with you. April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Life in the Land of IS..the Amazing Story of Lani Deauville is a memoir written by Bette Lee Crosby about the life of Lani Deauillle. Last year I reviewed Bette's novel Spare Change and loved it. When Betty approached me to review this, I was a little hesitant. I don't particularly read non-fiction and especially something that might make me cry. I will always be thankful to Bette for asking me to review this. It is truly an inspirational story, of human courage and the power of living in IS moments. I laughed more then I cried, and Lani's story touched me. It is the kind of story that stays with you.

When Lani was seventeen a diving accident left her a quadriplegic. This occurred in the fifty's when Doctor's knew little of the illness and most suffered from other infections and died. Lani not only lived, she changed the world she lived in, loved and was successful in so many areas of her life.

Lani and Crosby take us through Lani's life beginning with her teens. Lani's childhood was unique and had both beautiful moments and ones that made me cry. I laughed at her antics, cried for her loss and wavered back in forth in my opinion of her mother. We travel with Lani as she goes from hospital to hospital. We witness first hand as she learns to feed and take care for herself. When Lani finally returns home, she maps out her life. Some in her position might be tempted to spend their day watching television and holding pity parties. Lani took on the world and her story will inspire you.

Crosby delivers Lani's story to us in such a way, that it feels like you and Lani are sitting at a table sharing a cup of Joe. The tale slips beautifully between past and present and kept me enthralled. Lani shares the good and the bad of her childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life In the Land of IS May 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The old saying "it is what it is" becomes the theme of this remarkable person's life. "Love can carry you to a place where there is faith and trust in an other human being." "Money and material possessions are easily lost, fame is quickly forgotten, but love and kind deeds live on forever in both heart and mind." This book is definitely a MUST read. She made her life of severe struggles become a road of helping others much more important than her own needs. SUPER BOOK!

More About the Author

USA Today Bestselling and Award-winning novelist Bette Lee Crosby brings the wit and wisdom of her Southern Mama to works of fiction--the result is a delightful blend of humor, mystery and romance along with a cast of quirky charters who will steal your heart away.

Born in Detroit and raised in a plethora of states scattered across the South and Northeast, Crosby originally studied art and began her career as a packaging designer. When asked to write a few lines of copy for the back of a pantyhose package, she discovered a love for words that was irrepressible. After years of writing for business, she turned to works of fiction and never looked back. "Storytelling is in my blood," Crosby laughingly admits, "My mom was not a writer, but she was a captivating storyteller, so I find myself using bits and pieces of her voice in most everything I write."

Crosby's work was first recognized in 2006 when she received The National League of American Pen Women Award for a then unpublished manuscript. Since that, she has gone on to win several more awards, including another NLAPW award, Royal Palm Literary Awards, the FPA President's Book Award Gold Medal and Reviewer's Choice Award and Reader's View Southeast Fiction Literary Award.

Her published works to date are: Blueberry Hill (2014), Jubilee's Journey (2013), What Matters Most (2013), The Twelfth Child (2012), Cupid's Christmas (2012), Cracks in the Sidewalk (2011), Spare Change (2011), and Life in the Land of IS (2012). Life in the Land of IS is a memoir written for Lani Deauville, a woman the Guinness Book of Records lists as the world's longest living quadriplegic.
