An Engaging Look At A Mat Legend,

This review is from: The Life And Legacy Of Frank Gotch: King of the Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestlers (Paperback)
Mike Chapman has provided an engaging overview of the life of Frank Gotch. While the text part of the book is not much more than a long magazine article, the author covers all the key points of Gotch's story: his beginnings; his discovery by the legendary wrestler/trainer--Farmer Burns, the controversy surrounding his bouts with George Hackenschmidt.
Chapman presents a convincing case that Hackenschmidt was just a poor loser, who couldn't accept the fact that his plodding Greco-Roman style was just no match for Gotch and his aggressive, and full-out catch style of wrestling. One can't help but imagine how Gotch would have fared in today's MMA style! The real delight of this book is in the photo section. It is simply wonderful and establishes Gotch as one of the first national sports heroes. He is also one of the first to cash in on that fame by product endorsements, including harley-Davidson. This little book is well worth reading--for both the casual reader, and the student of wrestling history. |
