Mildly Disappointed,
By Hal Seed "Dr. Hal Seed, founding pastor of Ne... (Oceanside, California) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Life Lessons: Books of Ruth & Esther (Paperback)
Max Lucado is one of the great Christian wordsmiths of the era, which is part of why I am disappointed with this book. - It doesn't have many words by Max. "Life Lessons," is a Bible study, with 8 to 12 questions for each chapter of Ruth and Esther. The content of the book is 10% Bible Study questions (which are good questions, by the way), 10% "Inspirational Words" from authors like Toni Campolo and Joe Stowell, and 80% the NCV and NKJV texts of Ruth and Esther. I own NCV and NKJV Bibles, so I would have preferred to pay $4.95 for Max's Bible Study and omitted the rest.
If you're looking for a simple Bible study, this might be a good one for you. It's nicely laid out and easy to follow. If you're looking for some background and content on the books of Ruth and Esther, you'll want to buy a different book.

Excellent Bible Study Book,

This review is from: Life Lessons: Books of Ruth & Esther (Paperback)
This is a 12 lesson bible study on the books of Ruth & Esther (4 lessons on Ruth and 8 lessons on Esther).
Each lesson has a particular theme based upon the bible reading. The lessons start with a reflection question then the Scripture is read. The Scripture is included in the book. Both the New Century Version and the New King James Version are included for comparison. The lessons do not usually include the entire chapter of Scripture, only the relevant portions needed for the particular theme of the lesson. There are some basic discovery questions and response questions which encourage you to think about the Scripture. There are also additional questions which get you thinking about how you can apply the Scripture in your life. The author also included an inspirational writing in each lesson as well as a prayer and additional bible readings demonstrating the theme of the lesson. There is room in the book to answer the questions as well as some journaling and additional thoughts. Overall, I would highly recommend this study book series for an individual, group, or even a sermon preparation guide. Each lesson takes about 1 hour to complete in a small group setting.

Most of this book is scripture and questions. The author offers very little insight which is more than disappointing. I have scripture and I have questions, so I did not need any that the author supplies.
The book does not live up to the reputation of the author.

I did this one my own. Was easy to follow and understand. Could not wait to continue the next day but thought about what I studied all day. Would recommend this and have.

A very good study,

I have all of the books in the Life Lessons series, and I also have the Inspirational Study Bible (NKJV). This study, as well as the rest in the series, is very well put together. What I especially love about this is that if you don't have your Bible with you, that's ok. The scripture portion is printed right there in the book. There are 2 columns of scripture for each portion of the study. One column is the NKJV (New King James Version) and the other is NCV (New Century Version). So, you have your choice to read between the 2 of those, or you can read both to see if one version emphasizes things differently. Its a very good idea. There is a question before you begin the lesson to make you ponder something that is related to the lesson which will be presented. Then, you read the portion, then answer questions. The back of the book has answers, or suggested answers, to some of the questions asked. This can be used for personal study, or can be used for group study. I highly recommend this book, and encourage you to get the others in the series as well.
