This review is from: Life-Like Trains N Scale Freight Flyer Electric Train Set (Toy)
I live alone in a small apt & have had no train since I was young back in the '40s & '50s when every Christmas I set up my train on a figure 8 track under the Christmas tree. I did a lot off research online before I finally settled on this train which I have put on one end of my dining table & plan to have a simple layout for it, probably with a Christmas tree in the middle of it.
My initial impression upon receiving the train was negative as I had to almost destroy the packaging in order to get it open. Then while I was carefully removing the train components, one of the little freight cars lost a pair of wheels due to being packed too tightly in the box. I was especially disappointed to see that the railings on the locomotive were very cheaply made, very fragile & easily torn off. One did partially tear off & the only way I could get it stuck back on was with scotch tape. However, despite my inferior eyesight due to aging, I was eventually able to replace the pair of wheels on the freight car. I set up the track & was able one by one to place first the locomotive & then the various cars on the track & finally get the train going after quite a bit of experimentation. Obviously the "N scale" because of its smaller size takes special handling but we have become "friends" now.

My son wanted to do N scale trains and a starter set was a good way to see whether he'd like it and stick with the hobby. We got this in 2008 and have since built a table layout and got many different engines and freight cars. We're now moving on to the world of DCC. But this set gave us a chance to get into the hobby and we have had a lot of fun with it. And we still use all the items from the set.
In general, Life-Like products aren't very good quality and we certainly prefer KATO engines and other cars, couplers and wheels/trucks. But you get what you pay for. And for the price I do believe this is a very good starter set. If you're unsure whether you'd like N Scale railroading, an inexpensive starter set like this one is a way to go. You can get set up and run trains in no time. The set comes with an engine (and a good one), several freight cars, track, power pack, some signs, power poles and a building kit. That's a good package and gave my son a chance to enjoy N scale trains as well as do some modeling by putting together the country store building kit. But if you do like model trains, plan on getting a different power pack (as well as many other things). The power pack that comes with the set isn't very good, it's more suited for powering lights and accessories rather than train. But once again, for a starter set this is a good value. A couple of notes on the rolling stock. While my son and I don't care much for Life-Like brand of rolling stock, I will say that the engine that comes with the set is a very good one (for not being KATO). It runs well, very smooth and is nice. It has directional lights and dynamic breaks. Definitely a good value for the price. And while it's not DCC ready, you can actually convert this to DCC. We're currently looking to install Digitrax' DZ125 decoder in our unit. The freight cars don't have the level of details that either Microtrains, KATO, Exactrail, BLMA, etc. cars have, but they don't cost $20-30 a piece either. The original trucks with Rapido couplers were pretty bad, but luckily we had some extra Atlas trucks that we installed and it did the trick. Now the cars run very well and very smooth. N scale railroading is a train load of fun this starter set is a good way to get into the hobby.

I use most of the track on my bigger layout. But i think this is a good train set for the price it is. 75$ is a cheap price for a N scale set. The Kato train sets are 200-300$ A lot more than this set. So now I have 3 engine's starting with the GP-18 engine from this set, then I got a Union Pacific, then i got a Burlington Northern i got the other two engines from a local hobby shop. Be careful with the track because the track bends and sometimes makes you get frustrated. This kind of track is made to last long if nailed to a board for a permanent layout. The shipping was fast.I Hope This Review Was Helpful To Many People.
