'Life and Limb' is an excellent climbing story with a slight difference. It is divided into three distinct parts, the accident, recovering in hospital and then his life afterwards where he gets stronger and stronger and pushes himself to try a variety of sports and eventually climb again. To say this is inspirational is an understatement, his resolve and positive attitude radiates out from every page and not only is this a great story, but it is also written in a totally gripping and captivating way. There are some excellent photos in a central colour section which only add to the story told. If you like this try 'Touching the Void' by Joe Simpson, or 'Between and Rock and a Hard Place' by Aron Ralston, both top climbing reads, the latter with a distinctly different feel due to being set in an American canyon rather than up a mountain. Overall 'Life and Limb' will keep you engrossed the whole time you read it and you'll find yourself going through the emotions in this book along with the author. You can't ask for much more.

This book can be broken into two distinct parts.
The first is the high excitement of the events of Chamonix, including the unfortunate set of events leading to the accident, the tragedy that follows, and the rescue and the initial recovery in a local hospital. This is well written and clever technique is used to mirror the events in the mountains with dialogue of what family and friends were encountering while waiting for news in the valley.

The second half tells of Jamies remarkable recovery which for me was too detailed and should have been the last 50 pages and not 150-200 pages of the book.

A good effort but would have perhaps been better as a short story.

Not up to the same standard as Joe Simpson's 'touching the void'.
