His father, a U.S. Senator, disapproved of his career choice and gave his son the option of becoming a lawyer or a medical doctor-Minton chose the latter. Throughout all of his travels, Minton collected information about amphibians and reptiles, and published more than 150 herpetological papers and books. Two popular books, Venomous Reptiles and Giant Reptiles, coauthored by his wife and lifelong assistant, Madge Rutherford Minton, have been staples for the younger generation of herpetologists. He also wrote A Contribution to the Herpetology of West Pakistan, which remains the most definitive book on the subject to date.

The fact that the author of this book, Dr. Sherman Minton, was my father may give me a slightly prejudiced view of this story. That notwithstanding, I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in herpetology, or just a love of animals and adventure. It is a saga of where something that began as a childhood hobby can lead a truly dedicated person.
We discovered this manuscript after my father died in 1999, and we believe that it was very nearly, if not completely, finished. Our greatest regret is that our Dad did not live to see it published.
