soul train,

BEATLESS(another Paul Martin project) first appeared on the music scene with "Latinaire", asingle that kicked off the critically acclaimed "New Latinaires" series from Ubiquity. Their debut full length, "LIFE MIRRORS", sometimes clubby, sometimes sultry, brings about the future of soul. All one needs to imagine are names like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, The Neville Brothers, and Sly and the family Stone processed through the pro-tools system of a west-end London studio. Featured on vocals is a pletora of amazing new singing and rapping talents, including Colonel Red, Quasimoto(aka Madlib, aka Yesterday's New Quintet), Nathan Haynes and more...

Beatless - Life Mirrors,
This review is from: Life Mirrors (Audio CD)
Alex Attias, after a string of outstanding singles, finally releases a full-length until his Beatless moniker. Life Mirrors demonstrates Attias' love of world and roots music. "The Truth" sounds like an African-American spiritual hymn. There's soul to spare on this album -- listen to the plaintive vocals on "Southern Breeze" or the drumming on "Like Sugar Like Rain." Indeed, there's a heavy African influence on the entire album, which imparts deep down feeling to the proceedings. The drum programming is intricate and carefully thought out -- the broken beats work wonderfully well with the African rhythms. Modern world music in the best sense of the word.

totally underrated,

I can't believe there was only one review of Life Mirrors. This project produced in the US by London-based Alex Attias & Paul Martin is a great compilation of soulful beats and hip-hop featuring various artists(very influenced by African roots/ African American music) yet all stringed together in a very unique and smooth drum&bass/NuJazz style! Lyrically it is also mostly socially/politically conscious! WAY ahead of it's time... Definitely recommended !
