Since 1996, High Point Police Captain Ron Stowes column "On the Beat" has appeared weekly in the High Point Enterprise. In this column, Stowe provides a realistic view of what goes on in the lives of the law and the lawless those who are called to serve, and those who, because of their choices, need to be served.
Life is More than a Box of Doughnuts is real life stuff stuff you dont see in the movies or even on your local TV news. You get many of the inside stories that officers talk about in roll calls and on coffee breaks. Much of it is humorous like the man who was in court to tell about how his wife had knocked out one of his teeth, which he kept, then offered to the judge as evidence. After hearing the mans story, the judge asked "Is this the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth?" Or, you will read about many of his "Dumb Crook" stories, which give validity to the premise that crime doesnt pay.
But some of it isnt so funny from "Family Matters" to the "In Memory" chapter where Stowe honors officers who had given the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives while on duty, including those heroes who died on September 11, 2001.
Aside from some names being changed to protect the not-so-innocent, the stories inside are true, thus proving the adage of truth being stranger than fiction. From the law enforcement perspective, this book guarantees to convince you that a cops Life is More than a Box of Doughnuts
