Editorial Reviews

Review

Not only is this one of the best bluegrass albums you ll hear in 2012, it s the best bargain you ll find. Thirty-nine songs performed by a total of 139 artists in a two-CD set. And it s for a good cause. Musicians Against Childhood Cancer stages a summer festival each year outside Columbus, Ohio, to raise money for St. Jude Children s Research Hospital in Memphis. --Keith Lawrence Bluegrass Notes

Musicians Against Childhood Cancer stages a summer festival each year outside Columbus, Ohio, to raise money for St. Jude Children s Research Hospital in Memphis. Performances at the festival are recorded, edited and released as CDs to help raise even more money. In 2006, the International Bluegrass Music Association named one of those albums, Celebration of Life, as its album of the year. The newest effort, an album titled Life Goes On, is thirty-nine songs performed by a total of 139 artists. On it is this incredible track by Chris Stapleton, the former lead for the bluegrass band The Steeldrivers. It s a cover of a classic George Jones and its perfection in sound. Do a good deed and buy this one at ruralrhythm.com. --That Nashville Sound

Product Description

The 2006 IBMA Album of the Year was Celebration Of Life, which was recorded live at the Musicians Against Childhood Cancer festival and set up by Darrel Adkins as a charity for St. Jude Children s Hospital in Memory of Amanda Lynn Mandy Adkins.
Life Goes On is the next chapter for this important music project and once again the Bluegrass music community has stepped up and supported the project with open arms and a big heart. Among the Top Artists includes such Bluegrass Superstars; Rhonda Vincent, Russell Moore & IIrd Tyme Out, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe, Lonesome River Band, Blue Highway, Marty Raybon, The Grascals, Tony Rice, Steeldrivers, Bradley Walker, Gibson Brothers, Sierra Hull, Junior Sisk and many more.
The title track Life Goes On is the first single from the album and surely speaks to the heart and soul and gives us a glimpse of the All-Star artist power contained on this exciting new 2 CD Set.
You can feel good knowing that 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of Life Goes On will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Article first published as music review on Blogcritics - Back in 2006, Skaggs Family Records released "Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer (MACC)," a two-CD collection with over two hours of live music that drew from the 2000-2005 MACC Festival in Columbus, Ohio. It became one of bluegrass music's top ten releases in 2006 and won the International Bluegrass Music Assn.'s Album of the Year Award. On the Rural Rhythm Records label, "Life Goes On" is the 2012 sequel to the original release and draws material from the 2006-2011 festivals.

Like the first album, Darrel Adkins, Bob Kelley and Jack Campitelli are its producers. After Darrel and his wife Phyllis lost their beautiful 22-year-old daughter, Mandy, to a brain stem tumor on November 25, 2000, the inspiration for MACC was born. While "Life Goes On," the memories and reflections only grow stronger from festival to festival. The charity was formed, and the festival was launched to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tn. where treatment is dispensed for children with terminal illness.

All 139 artists donate their performance for this project, and all are big names in bluegrass music. It takes seven pages of the CD jacket just to lay out the pickers and singers on the 39 songs. Like the 2006 release, this collection offers a few duos, trios and even band configurations we don't often hear play together regularly. One example is the song, "Paul's Ministry," that includes Paul Williams, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe, Carl White, Jason Barie, and Mike Rogers. Another example is "Memories of Mother" with James King, Dudley Connell, Russell Moore, Adam Steffey, Marshall Wilborn, and Ron Stewart.

This follow-up to the 2006 benefit album - "Celebration of Life" - features a wide variety of modern bluegrass performers (139 of them if you count each member of the "groups"!) performing 39 songs on this jam packed double-disc set, with each disc clocking in at about 70 minutes. It was recorded live at a benefit concerts for Musicians Against Childhood Cancer from 2006 through 2011 and all the net proceeds are going to St. Jude Medical Center in Memphis. With a cause like this the album gets lots of Amazon "stars" from me.

But, even if this wasn't a charity album, the music here recommends it. I'm familiar with many of the performers (Rhonda Vincent, The Grascels, Doyle Lawson, Tony Rice and The Lonesome River Band to name a few) but discovered a few new to me (Randy Kohrs Band, Bradley Walker and Danny Paisley). SIX different labels came together to allow this comp to happen (Compass, Rounder, Rebel, Rural Rhythm, Mountain Home and Vincent's own Upper Management Music) and it deserves the support of bluegrass fans.

Cancer strikes every age group but for kids who haven't even experienced much of life, it's a real tragedy. Hopefully sales of this CD will help ease the suffering and provide research for a cure.

This CD features a great variety of songs from a multitude of extremely gifted artists for a very worthwhile cause. This style of music is the thread from which is woven the fabric that is America.
