5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, April 12, 2004
This review is from: Life is My Bitch (Paperback)
Ishida brings an incredible vivacity and sensitive, full-ranged humor to his comics. The style is impeccable--his versitality, polish, and imitation are unmatched in webcomics (with the possible exception of Checkerboard Nightmare), and he posesses the ability to capture any range of expression or caricature with such fluidity and consistency that the reader may marvel at his ability. The humor is consistently light-hearted, but surprisingly, the strip ranges from almost brow-raisingly crude ([errotic] readings) to heart-warmingly pure, and /almost/ silly (Pooch and Percy). However, both seem to spring from the same mind, the same undrestanding, and the same viewpoint. The effect is that both are given the same whimsical feel, as if the author is saying, "Hey, there's virtue in everything. There's vice in everything. It's all good." Even with this philosophy, however, the strip never lacks in social and psychological insight.

Every strip is handled with equal, fluid ease--one never feels that a punchline was forced (unless it's obviously intentional and part of the gag). Indeed, Ishida often entirely forgoes a punchline, relying instead on the inherent lovability and cuteness of each one of his characters to carry through the effect of a particular strip, which is amazingly effective as a humor device, and speaks to the careful thought and inidividuality given to each character as much as Ishida's ability to just be funny.

Perhaps the only thing about this comic that isn't endearingly funny is the punny hilarity of the daily, unqiue, "epitaph" located by the by-line in each strip. I'm simply astounded that Ishida has been able to come up with hundreds of unique gags with such an incredibly limited scope without ever being boring or repeating himself. It reminds one of Mozart's variations.

All in all, if you don't mind the /occasional/ irreverence, this is a strip you /want/ to read every day. I had never before seen a strip that manages to transcend a mere daily laugh-gag (though that can be a fine art--c.f. Get Fuzzy) to be something in touch with a deeper, more beautiful humor, without ever giving off even a hint of cornball. That was before I discovered Sinfest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shamelessly mocking, January 4, 2004

An excellent comic by a keenly observant and quite talented artist; my one suggestion: go to his website, where the book is $15 instead of $22.

I was thrilled to finally see Book Two of the wonderful webcomic Sinfest available after all this time. I read this webcomic each morning, and it's pretty clever. I've had Book One in my bathroom, reading it over and over and over. I probably know all of them by heart. Now I'll have another to keep me occupied. Ishida is a fresh talent, and we should all encourage him to continue his comic, even if the newspapers are too clueless to pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tatsuya Ishida does it again, July 19, 2010
This review is from: Life is My Bitch (Paperback)
If you like web comics, go no further than sinfest. Tatsuya Ishida creates a wonderful blend of characters that spring for th comic delights again and again. It's not for little kids, more like anyone fifteen and over. The main concept of the comic is God and the devil vying for one of the main character's (Slick) soul, and hilarity ensues.

It's all been said before by other 5-star reviewers...and I crave other comics from Tatsuya Ishida - he is very good, too good for syndication, even!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Sinfest for the morally confounded, August 30, 2005
This review is from: Life is My Bitch (Paperback)
Excellent little strips which will amuse adults and corrupt children. Highly recommended. Arguments between God and the devil, pimp ninja, calligraphy and occasionally a cute cat and dog strip.

This comic is one of the best I've read in a long while. Whitty, sarcastic, and blasphemous all at the same time. Yeah, it rocks long and hard.

This is a work of art. I have been reading the web comic for a little over 6 months and when I bought this, I knew that I had gotten myself into something so good that I couldn't let go. This is one of the best books I have gotten my hands on. Five Stars all the way!!!
