Editorial Reviews

A fifty-year-old prostitute, no longer able to attract men, looks back on her sad life. Once a lady-in-waiting at the imperial court at Kyoto, Oharu fell in love with, and became the lover of, a man below her station. They were discovered, and Oharu and her family were exiled. For Oharu there followed a life filled with one sorrow and humiliation after another.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good looking, but not captivating, January 13, 2012
This review is from: The Life of Oharu (1952) (Import All Region) (DVD)
These episodes from the life of Oharu lurch from segment to segment with only occasionally clear transitions. Some of the episodes are engaging or interesting, all of the episodes look good (great cinematography and set and costume design). Unfortunately, I never cared about the tragic heroine or what became of her, the editing and storytelling were too distancing.

Well, I cared once. When Oharu collapsed at one point I thought, "Thank god, she's dead". She wasn't.

3.0 out of 5 stars The life of Oharu, June 27, 2011

Bought a Korean copy that had its problems, but english sub-titles. The film had parts that were too black, too bright and about 2 hours into it 4 minutes repeated as if a film roll was changed.

The movie is about a girl who gets sold over and over again, from a rich family to dirt poor. She survives and the opium pipes are ever present. Takes place at the end of the samuari period when land owners were thought of as royalty. As a collector of Japanese movies, I enjoyed it with all the flaws.

I was worried about the subtitles but they functioned perfectly. Not much else to say, this is what it is.
