Review

Going over the Edge? is a powerful illustration of the complexities of intimate relationships between individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their neurotypical partners. Dr. Marshack brings great clarity to the dynamic influences that shape these relationships ... for better or for worse. She has brought stature to a voice from the autism community that has been waiting to be heard. Many family members and partners will appreciate the cathartic nature of her work, and professionals will find a depth of insight and feeling that is rarely articulated so well. Pay attention to every word of this book. There is nothing else like it! --Sherry A. Moyer, B.S., Asperger Syndrome consultant, NHS Human Services, Pennsylvania

With vivid examples drawn from years of professional practice and life experience, Dr. Marshack expertly guides the reader towards success in marriage when Asperger Syndrome is present. Full of practical tips, the major lesson learned from this book is that learning to interface between the different operating systems of spectrum and non-spectrum partners leads to better communication with greater mutual understanding and satisfaction. Highly recommended to all seeking to learn more about Asperger Syndrome and long-term relationships. --Yi Liu Shore

5.0 out of 5 stars Liberating, July 3, 2009
This is the most honest and rewarding book on Aspergers in adults I have so far read. I would recommend it equally to people on either side of the diagnosis. Kathy Marshack writes with palpable humanity. For people who have to suffer the confusion of living with Aspergers there is real hope offered. This is the first time I have felt after reading a book that for both sufferers of Aspergers and those that suffer because of them, there is real practical insight and advice given.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life saving guide, June 8, 2009
This book has many examples of actual situations that occur in marriages between an 'aspergers'(AS) and a 'normal'(NT) person. It looks at the outcomes when partners have no outside help and use only patience and grit. Marshack makes it clear that many of these marriages need outside help to survive and thrive. She raises the link between codependency and aspergers in a NT/AS relationship. I found my feelings around my marriage validated and also my understanding of my husband's (AS) point of view enhanced. I have a new empathy for the difficulties that an AS person faces in the world. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Detailed and Encouraging, September 16, 2009

(REAL NAME)
Dr Marshacks simplistic style and thoughtful approach truly helped me to understand Aspergers Syndrome - something that was very new to me. After reading it, it was like all the puzzle pieces fell into place. I have renewed strength and hope that now upon discovering the source of the struggles in my relationship with my spouse we have new tools to work with and hope for our future. I encourage anyone to read this book. It provides examples of real life stories and tools for hope.
