Danna's composing credits also include the Oscar®-winning hit Little Miss Sunshine, for which he shared a Grammy® Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album, (500) Days of Summer, The Time Traveler's Wife and the Oscar®-winning Girl, Interrupted. Danna also received an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Main Title Theme music for the theme to the Starz original series, Camelot, starring Joseph Fiennes.

Once in a while a film comes along which seems predestined to be scored by a certain composer; in 2012, that film is Life of Pi and that composer is Mychael Danna. Based on the successful novel by Yann Martel, and directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi is a film which asks all the big questions - about life, death, religion, fate, identity, reality - and answers them through an incredible story told by Piscine Molitor Patel (Irfan Khan), commonly known as Pi, an Indian immigrant to Canada, who relates his life story to an enraptured journalist (Rafe Spall), who is researching a book. Born into a relatively wealthy family in Pondicherry, India, where his father owned a zoo, Pi's life is thrown into chaos after the family decides to emigrate to Canada; the boat they are traveling on capsizes in a storm, leaving 16-year old Pi (Suraj Sharma) the only survivor - except for a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and an ill-tempered Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, who all are forced to share the same tiny lifeboat. What follows is an extraordinary story of friendship, trust, survival, faith and belief, ad Pi must overcome his greatest fears and the overpowering forces of nature to reach safety.

The film is a masterpiece on multiple levels; it is visually astonishing, bursting with color and life, vivid and memorable imagery laced with symbolism, and containing some of the best 3-D filmmaking I have ever seen. Conceptually, the film is a fascinating examination of truth and perspective, and how the nature of reality can be manipulated by the person through whose perspective you experience it. It looks at religion through fresh eyes, offering the viewer questions about the concept of faith - Christian, Islamic and Hindu - and its relationship to the natural world.

The score shimmers with the beauty and magnificence of the film. The tiger, the fury of the storms, the oceans and, of course, Pi himself are wonderfully represented through the sometimes haunting, sometimes lighthearted, always spiritual tracks on this highly recommended cd.

No question that this film has such tremendous visuals that the central score may be overlooked. It certainly catches one's attention in the lyrical first section....people floating in pools seem to hover in space...the titles and end titles have a mystical quality...and India's soul seem to emanate from the music. I simply recommend that you sample the Mp-3's to remind yourself of the experience. Note the playful mix of french and indian music during the Piscine Molitor French hotel sequence. Also the way the music evokes the stillness of the ocean, and the wonder of it (cut 18.The Whale). I've sen the film twice now...it is truly a magical experience. Many wonderful musical themes in this film. The meditative material may be well suited for one reading or putzing about in their home.....

I'll get right to it. I saw Life Of Pi and wasn't a fan of the story. I'm not religious but it wasn't the religious aspect of the story that I wasn't a fan of. In the midst of all the CGI and scenes of wonder I felt the point of the film became lost by the end. Anywho, while the film didn't resonate with me I can happily say that Mychael Danna's score did. This is a score that you are aware of at the beginning but slowly lose track of in the film, it really blends into the narrative well. On CD though you can get a true appreciation of what Danna succeeds in doing. The music is really an integral part of the universe in this film. It has an Indian accent in the beginning, but once we go on the journey it truly takes us to a place only music can.

The score has moments of haunting beauty that play off the visuals that Ang Lee crafted in the film. There is a very focused character journey in the music, and it honestly plays very well on its own. It is definitely a striking listen. I just wish the story that was unfolding onscreen kept its emotional weight by the time we got to the end. There is a spiritual essence to the music in the first act. The music gently places a giant magnifying glass on your existence as nothing else exists around you. Such is the case with Pi being stranded in the ocean. The second act of the score introduces a bit more to the character of Pi and his inner thoughts, his struggle and constant acceptance of his fate. The last act sort of blends those first two together, and we get this balanced mix of character and spiritual magnifying of the plot. It truly is a score that will access your mind and deep within you. Unfortunately the end of the story totally negates everything, at least for me.

By far the best soundtrack of the decade. Still in awe of the movie and its soundtrack.

I have it playing while working, and makes for double the productivity!
