Douglas Kirkland is one of the leading photographers on this planet. His numerous topical photo books have long inspired his colleagues, as well as a new generation of photographers. ‘A Life in Pictures’ is a manifesto of his whole career. It shows how he moves elegantly from black and white documentary to celebrity portraiture, from fashion to fine art nudes, from movie stills to magazine covers. Is there any major movie star who has not taken the time to be photographed by Douglas Kirkland? The introduction to the book reveals his respectful and caring personality, always sensitive, thoughtful and curious. Many of the celebrity portraits can be considered classics; other photographs have never been published. Yet, they are all treasures to the eye. The printing is excellent, and the strong binding brings together his greatest work into this seven-pound masterpiece.

Douglas Kirkland is a living legend who has depicted the pinnacle of Hollywood glamour (and many other subjects) for more than 60 years. Name a Hollywood beauty—from Marilyn Monroe to Angelina Jolie—and chances are very good that Kirkland has photographed her, beautifully. If you love films, movie stars or just great portraiture, you need this book.

"Douglas Kirkland A Life in Pictures" is a wonderful odyssey that takes us from the first picture he took at the age of 10 (as well as the first picture of him taken when he was 8 months old in Toronto) through 60 years of his career and life with movie stars and filmmakers including out-of-the-box wonderful projects on the Italians. Douglas is a creative master bringing beauty and harmony to the people he photographs. His pictures convey both his ability to connect to the people and the evident respect and care he brings to his art.
The range of his photographic work is as phenomenal as his writing is deeply moving. While his professional journey is extraordinary, his personal journey, his love for his family and friends and the devotion to his profession, are even more impressive, inspiring and uplifting.
I much enjoyed this lavish book exploring the life of one of the most celebrated photographers of this century.

This is an amazing book. The photo's themselves are beautiful and each tells it's own story, but the story of Douglas Kirkland's journey from passionate teen in Canada snaping photo's with his box camera, not listening to family and friends who said give it up, do something practical, to the 20 something photojournalist who had the guts to ask Elisabeth Taylor, the world's leading lady, fresh from Cleopatra, if she would let him photograph her, is the real story.
It is a story about passion, drive and hard work. And also of love which is reflected not only in the written words of this book, but in every wonderful photograph.
It is the one book for everyone on your holiday list!

Tedious, with poor choice of cover out of all the options that Kirkland has provided over the years and a garish choice of typeface. What a terribly designed book. A tragedy that Kirkland's agent would allow the publisher to release this overdone monstrosity
