This review is from: Life in the Prehistoric Age (Board book)
I am homeschooling a little one and most of the books on prehistory are way too much information in your face all at once and/or written at too high of a level. This one isn't so overwhelming and yet does a good job of covering a broad range of information about prehistoric man. Each page has about a paragraph of information, good illustrations, and labels and explanations for the pictures. The pictures aren't so detailed as to be overwhelming and yet do a good job of illustrating and teaching. The original format of cutting the boards to create a 3 dimensional mammoth scene adds interest. Using boards throughout the book protects the regular pages. Had they all been boards the book would have been too fat or they would have had to leave something out.
Its very sad that this book is not in print since its the best one I have found for the age 4-8 group. There are way too many dinosaur books out there and not nearly enough on early man. And there are way too many story books that put dinosaurs and humans together (which they weren't) and there are very few good little kids prehistory historical fiction books (most very bad history). This isn't historical fiction, but is written in a manner that will attract smaller children and is accurate. Now if someone would just do a good job on some prehistorical fiction for little ones . . .
