4.0 out of 5 stars Great Everyday Bible!, December 24, 2004
This review is from: Life Promises Bible, The (Hardcover)
The first thing I noticed was that the pages of this Bible are very thin and you can see through to the next page when looking at it. The pages are also easily bent since they are so thin. I don't think this Bible would last long (year) in good condition if it was used every day. I was surprised to see that the hardcover version is actually blue underneath with a removable paper jacket which contains the beautiful picture of the waterfall/stream. This jacket also appears somewhat fragile, and is not attatched in any way to the blue hardcover.
I like the simple plan which the Bible uses which has you reading two to three paragraphs and a few Bible passages related to narrative for that day. This Bible allows you to read five days a week and have two days off per week. You could easily read the entire week's worth of verses and narratives in a half hour if you wanted to. I think that is doable and much more achieveable than trying to read the entire Bible in a year. One of the things I did not like was the fact that at the end of each narrative they have "God's Promise to You" which I at first assumed was a Bible verse but later realized it is a summary statement for that verse which I would rather have them quote the text instead of trying to paraphrase a summary for the verse. I do like the book introductions and the Topical Index and Concordance which are great helps. I wish the words of Christ were in Red, but that is a personal thing. The Promise Notes in this Bible are the perfect size and do not interfere with the text or distract you from it. This Bible uses only two colors for the text, black and blue.
I love the way the notes are written in a way that is interesting and engaging. They are very simple and fun to read. Some might think that they are notes for a children's Bible, but they work well for adults too. I would rather have the notes be understandable and slightly childish then overtheological, and confusing. If you want to understand the Bible, stay focused on the text, and enjoythe pleasure of reading without getting bogged down by hundreds of notes this is the Bible for you. I am pleased with the content of this Bible, and my only problems were with the pages being too thin, and the paper cover which is just a dust jacket for the hard-back leather- like cover.
