Trifids and Penises?!?!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
Halucinagins pale to the trip Dinky has taken me on. I am amazed that one man has been a part of the lives of my favorite rock icons - Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed, B.B. King - the list goes on and on. The book is written in an easy style that paints a clear picture of what it was like to live in the 60'-70's - really. The book doesn't harp on the Woodstock cliches, but explains the experiences on planes, in hotel rooms, women, back alley venues to huge stadiums - the book is a series of anecdotes that crystalizes an era.BUT - this biography, documentary, historical record is FUNNY as Hell! Carter Allen kicks butt. I will not ramble on - this is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Important Behind The Scenes Information, a Credible Source,

This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
Stuart Dawson is one of the hardest working and kindest human beings you could ever want to meet. His work with The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed, Steely Dan, etc. etc. etc. islegend. He engineered two of the last three Roy Orbison concerts before Mr. Orbison passed away. The show was magical...it was my second time seeing Roy that year, and thesound was brilliant. When I was incollege I remember skipping classes to buy tickets to The Kinks, Lou Reed at Lenox, Rock & Roll Animal atThe Orpheum, reading this book is like re-living my teens and early 20's...the sound system I sat in front of at the Kinks show (which was an amazing show in itself) is there in the book at the Lou ReedLenox gig in all its' zillions of four inch speakers glory. This book is an historical document that needs to be read by anyone interested in rock history, the aforementioned bands, or the escapades of a madcap sound engineer. It is one of the best rock books ever written, and Carter Alan deserves credit for being able to take the mountains of information and distell it all into a highly enjoyable and easy to read collection. This book is GREAT>

Lies and bragging,

This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
I just recently had the misfortune to read this trash. Besides many typical chronological inaccuracies, among this lying braggart's self glorification, there are so many lies about me that I cannot do the subject justice. It's not just sensationalism, which I am used to reading regarding me and my lifestyle choice, but this is abhorrent.
So sad, so sorry.

Life On The Road Rules,
By Scott Cassano (Brighton, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
Dinky Dawson used to run sound at The Channel nightclub. I think I met him when Roy Orbison did his second to last show. When his name was on this book I flipped through it at a store and had to buy it. There are books with rock & roll secrets, and this one tells them without being a gossip book. It is a real book about real things that fans want to know - more like The Wall Street Journal going behind the scenes than the National Enquirer. Carter Alan does a good job telling the stories like he's reading this on the air at WZLX, the classic rocker in Boston where he's a dj. It is folksy, but there is great content here - stuff that you won't find anywhere else. The book doesn't say if Dawson is out there still recording people and doing sound. It would be cool to see the guy in action after reading this book.

The story of a sound engineering genius,
By A Customer
This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
Incredible! This is an anthology of an era as seen through the life of a man who was a major part of the scene. If you ever wanted to know what REALLY goes on "on the road" and with the "Stars" you must read this. The most incredible part is that he "survived" those times.

Not Very Well Written,
By A Customer
This review is from: Life on the Road: The Incredible Rock 'N' Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson (Paperback)
The stories are supposed to be about the "wild days of rock and roll". Unfortunately, during the course of the book, not very much interesting happens. The writing is stiff and predictable.

That says it. The first few chapters were ok, but after that it got so tedious that I couldn't finish it.
