5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Music, October 1, 2000
This review is from: Life of Saturdays (Audio CD)
Dexter Freebish have finally released their debut album, and it's great. Finally there is good music to listen to! The album never fails to deliver, starting with the latest smash single track, "Leaving Town", all the way to the melancholy end with "Bring Me Water". The entire album is made of well-crafted, well-sung songs that you will be putting on repeat all night long. Before you know it, it will be 3AM and you won't even have your teeth brushed...Anyway, some personal favorites of mine are "Deeper", "Tomorrow", "Falling Down", "My Madonna", and "Higher". All the songs are examples of good pop/rock, and they all contain good hooks. I can only hope that the rest of the world will soon discover Dexter Freebish because they deserve to be around for a long time, and they have the talent to do so. I bought this album on a whim, and I love it. Suck it up and buy it! You won't be dissapointed, I guarentee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic debut, June 22, 2001
This review is from: Life of Saturdays (Audio CD)
Dexter Freebish got some heavy airplay here in Charlotte with their song "Leaving Town," and it's not hard to see why. Lead singer Kyle has not only got a fantastic voice with good, solid range, but he and the other guys clearly have a talent for writing interesting, yet very catchy songs. One listen to this CD, and there's no way you'll be able to stop playing it.

The music is excellent--no question, but the real achievement here is the songs themselves. "My Madonna" quite possibly sums up the way most women would want their significant other to see them; the song is a real tribute from a man to a woman he's completely taken with. You ladies out there will definitely appreciate the things Kyle sings in this song (I know I do).

"Bring Me Water" fits well as a final track--it's very short, almost no accompaniment, and really showcases Kyle's voice. "Falling Down" is a good song with a faster beat than the other tracks, and you will certainly find yourself wondering what the heck a "paisley shade" is (listen to the song). The only song I can't seem to listen to is the one that begins "I just wanna sail the seven seas" -- I don't even recall the title because the opening annoys me so much.

Dexter Freebish is a refreshing change from the schmaltz currently playing on the radio, so I highly recommend this CD as a must-have on any road trip. I really hope their next release propels them to even bigger things!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dexter who?, May 22, 2001
By
Ryan Holliday (Long Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life of Saturdays (Audio CD)
As soon as Dexter Freebish released their debut album, A Life of Saturdays, the quintuplet had to have known something big was about to happen. Since the release Dexter has quit their day jobs and found themselves on tours with Everlast and SR-71, as well as performances in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Radio Music Awards. The once small secret in Texas has since been exposed to a numerous, nation-wide fan base.

The first single, "Leaving Town," which has gained airplay coast to coast, has brought Dexter Freebish into the mainstream. Dexter gained even more attention when "Leaving Town" won the honorable John Lennon Song Writing Award for Best Song of the Year.

Smooth melodies fill every track, and after a couple of times listening to a song, you cannot help but sing along. Songs like "Higher" and "Spotlight" expose the true musical talent of the band, with superbly produced blends of guitars, drums, and vocals.

However, the song "Higher" best displays the tragic flaw of the album with the elementary and stupid lyrics: "Her thin, white tanktop was almost see through/ I've always been attracted to her butterfly tattoo."

Although many people claim to be against pop music (in which Dexter Freebish welcomingly places themselves), the catchy lyrics and lively vocals make A Life of Saturdays nearly irresistible to dislike.
