5.0 out of 5 stars And I thought *I* was cynical!, June 30, 1999
By
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
The only other book that has caused me to laugh out loud as much was, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Sadly, this information is as frightening as it is funny.

I've already purchased two to give to friends, and I'll have to get more. Any male who is about to get hitched should read this and weep. It's the terrible truth. I know. I've been there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious, realty based and useful guide., March 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
I had the privilage of reading the manuscript of this absolutely hysterical Guy's Survival Guide.

As I read it, I had the feeling I was sitting around with my buddies talking truthfully about the realities of women, dating and marraige. I felt totally understood by the author as he brilliantly described the nuances of relationships between men and women.

In addition to its brilliant humor, it's also very informative and helpful for men seeking a lifetime mate.

Whether married or single you will find this Guide extremely funny. It's as if the book was written about you and your experiences with women, dating, engagement and marraige. Buy it and laugh your face off.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for those considering the matrimonial plunge!, March 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
Okay, the book is still in galleys so I haven't acutally read the final cut yet, but I DID see the draft and, truth be told, lived down the hall from Jeff as he wrote his magnum opus. If the hackles coming from his room during the process were any indication, HE certainly thinks the book is funny!

In all seriousness, "Life Sentence" is a biting, satirical take on one of mankind's most hallowed rituals. Smith takes the "we" out of "wedding," intelligently and humorously dissecting the event from inception to conception. He finally offers a hilarious "must and mustn't do" account for those still convinced that they should take the plunge. A fun read!

5.0 out of 5 stars In Humor There Is Truth, November 16, 1999
By
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
As a psychiatrist, and as a guy who's been married and divorced twice, I think this is one of the funniest and most profoundly truthful books I've read in recent years. I'm looking forward to more from Mr. Smith. He a has a quality of writing that reminds me of PJ O'Rourke. I hope he can turn his sense of ironic wit to other topics as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars PJ O'Rourke meets Dr. Laura, May 18, 1999

This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
A funnier take on the hallowed institution, you will not find. At its core, however, Life Sentence is unmistakably truthful . Written in a brisk, imaginative style -- with unusually clever quotes from famous historical figures in front of each chapter -- I challenge anyone to read this and not laugh out loud. It's hard to believe this is a first book. JD Smith's wit, intelligence, and pithy insight in Life Sentence should catch the attention of readers and publishers everywhere. A new star has arrived on the literary scene!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and True., August 3, 2007
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
I just finished writing a book on women yesterday, and going through the endnotes made me think of writing something here about Life Sentence. While none of his arguments or positions made it into my book I ended up citing J.D. Smith about three times due to the outstanding and entertaining quotes he had concerning women that he used to precede each chapter. Some of them were real gems. Life Sentence is a fun, little ditty that offers up a light-hearted and whimsical look at women and marriage. A lot of what he has to say here is very true I think. And for the price, well you can't beat it. By the way, I think I spent 10 bucks for mine back when I got in 1999. Oh well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof of Genius, May 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life Sentence: The Guy's Survival Guide to Getting Engaged and Married (Paperback)
Jeffrey "Duke" Smith is the only person I've ever known who actually uses the letters on the telephone. He makes his phone numbers into clever catch phrases based on the corresponding letters, so that his friends can never forget how to reach him. If this isn't the sort of genius we need in the literary world of today, then I'll eat my copy of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.
