5.0 out of 5 stars Whether you are leaving home to live on your own, August 26, 2001
for the first time, or simply feel you have missed a few points along the way, this is the book for you. Tina Pestalozzi writes in a positive, matter of fact style about important matters such as financial planning, social skills, setting up a first apartment or home, and landing a job. I bought this book as a gift for a psychotherapy client who is planning on moving out of his family home for the first time. However in previewing it, I was reminded of some tasks I need to attend to in my own household: tightening up my long term financial plan and improving my organization skills, for example. This book is perfect for both young men and women who are starting off on their own. I can envision parents sitting down with their teenagers and going through the topics together. The book is set up perfectly for this kind of discussion. For those of you about to be on your own for the first time, enjoy! This is a time in your life you will always remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the best, September 7, 2008
Life Skills 101 is the very first book you should read if you are planning on moving out on your own. It has absolutely everything you will need to know, not only from the planning stages on through the move, but for life's little "surprises" that will soon be your own personal challenges. Advice on jobs, renting, and even your car, it's all here. A good accompaniment to this book is Money Sucks! Money Strategies for Real Life, with it's easy-to-read advice on handling money, from checkbook to income taxes. And, if you want a less complicated - and humorous - approach to moving out, 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother is a good choice. But for those who are seriously committed to the moving out process, and willing to do a bit of reading, Life Skills 101 is a solid choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars a basic guide to living on your own, December 18, 2008
"Life Skills 101" is a basic guide to living on your own. I wish that our public schools had room for a course based on a book such as this, to be in middle school or junior high school. Too many young people leave high school with no idea of how to live on their own or what an adult life requires in skills and abilities or planning.

Tina Pestalozzi does a good job and covers a wide spectrum of skills and considerations. However, I feel that the book could do a better job of covering the case where someone goes off to college. I also feel that some of the discussions might be better if taken one step further. Also, there is a lack of pointers on where more information is available.

This book is a good start to learning which skills and abilities will be needed when one goes out to live on their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good resource, June 13, 2008
This book provides all the elements necessary to quickly and easily present and teach independent living skills to adolescents who are aging out of the foster care system. I recommend this publication to anyone who is working with teenagers who are moving from dependency into an independent living situation.
