Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-These well-organized volumes introduce their subjects in an accessible manner. Each two-page chapter contains a brief text and a mixture of reproductions of period drawings and paintings, as well as archival and modern reenactment photographs. The first two titles cover how colonies and cities got started and grew, describing communication, houses, occupations, childhood, education, clothing, and food. Readers will be able to contrast today's cities and way of life with the very different living conditions in the past with the help of the copious illustrations. The third title provides an overview of plantation life, alternately describing the lives of the planters and slaves. In all three titles, insert boxes highlight information and often serve as captions for the illustrations. Challenging or unfamiliar words are highlighted and explained in the glossaries. Each book also contains a recipe from the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars a book I LOVE to hate -- a "necessary evil":, August 12, 2009
By
Barbara Stienstra (Goshen, New York United States) - See all my reviews
Since for two decades I lived in the home supposedly of The GRANT Family, I was browsing the library shelves and came across this book and decided to read it, as I will be heading South in retirement.

The photos that accompany the manuscript made me feel so depressed and sympathetic for people who have been long deceased.

At first, I thought the pictures that were created had the hovels in which the slaves were quartered looked too NICELY DRAWN, and then there was a photo and still the quarters looked too "good!"

I felt page 4 was "enough" -- that page 8 repeated what had already been conveyed, and I asked another librarian who felt the same way. I am one of those readers who find if it
is said ONCE, it is enough
and does NOT need to be REPEATED
and if it is repeated REPEATEDLY
chances are the book has "lost me." (with the exception of a textbook, ofcourse.)

How the author/graphic designer juxtaposed the two lifestyles was excellent for the young reader. The timeline also adds merit, and the map of the United States is helpful
BUT I WISH
THE GREY/GRAY areas were not left murkey (pardon the pun) but included a key
to know "where those STATES 'stood',
or didn't 'stand'"
in the "scheme of things!"
(a bit "cryptic" there on my part as well.)
