Editorial Reviews

A four disc boxed set (3 CDs + 1 bonus DVD) celebrating the career of legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes.

A Life in Time not only tells Roy's story - it tells a thrilling story of jazz, and all of its glorious changes. Featuring highlights of Roy's work as a sideman and as a bandleader, this one-of-a-kind collection brings together a plethora of history-making recordings.

Roy was there: Bud Powell's first sessions for Blue Note ("Bouncin' with Bud"); Sonny Rollins' first recordings as a leader ("I Know," featuring Miles Davis on piano); Charlie Parker's classic latin sessions ("My Little Suede Shoes"); Etta Jones' break-out hit for Prestige ("Don't Go To Strangers"); Eric Dolphy's boundary stretching Outward Bound; Thelonious Monk with Johnny Griffin at The Five Spot ("Rhythm-a-ning"); John Coltrane changing the sound of the Newport Jazz Festival ("My Favorite Things"); Chick Corea's breakthrough ("Matrix"); and the list goes on!

Equally as impressive are Roy's great moments as a leader: with Phineas Newborn and Paul Chambers from We Three; with Rahsaan Roland Kirk on the classic Out of the Afternoon; the funky fusion of Roy's early 70's Mainstream recordings ("Equipoise"); great moments with Pat Metheny ("James"); Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove and Dave Holland featured on the all-star tribute to Bird ("My Heart Belongs To Daddy"); to his most recent Grammy Nominated recordings with the Fountain of Youth band.

Featuring a brand new essay by renowned author and jazz historian Ashley Kahn, and a wonderful bonus DVD (45 min) featuring exclusive interviews, a rare performance from 1973, and a jaw-dropping performance from the 2005 Modern Drummer Festival! A Life in Time: The Roy Haynes Story is the jazz event of the year!

This is an all around great box-set! Haynes ranks among the greatest ever in jazz percussion, having played with many of the jazz greats. This set offers material from not only Haynes himself, but his side-work with Coltrane, Dolphy, Vaughn, Corea and other legends. This set will particularly appeal to jazz drummers, but the whole set swings and will be enjoyed by any true jazz fan. Check it out!!!

Wow!! A jazz drummer who can play rock, with feeling. Roy Haynes is truly a drummer for the ages. Bebop, cool, straight ahead, funk, jazz-rock. 50's, 60's , 70's 80's. 90's, New milenia. He keeps them all in their unique rhythms. The DVD is worth the price of the whole set, and the whole set is priceless.

There could not be a better retrospective or a better history of modern jazz as seen through the work of a single individual. From Charlie Parker through Haynes's current reedman Jaleel Shaw, the common thread is the one remarkable drummer. The inter-connections ("degrees of separation") probably comprise every major jazz musician (and probebly hundreds of lesser ones) of at least the last 60 years, and right up to the moment. The choices of pieces and quality of sound are superlative. And that's just the three CD's of music! The fourth (and the booklet)provide oral context, a personal interview, and, to indulge in understatement, "a drum solo".

I had the great pleasure of seeing Mr. Haynes perform a few weeks ago: the first half of the show being his current first-rate group; the second an all-star group (Danilo Perez, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Holland--- how's that?) with the ageless Haynes in command. This set is every bit as much fun, fantastic music. This is really one for the ages!
