5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic material..., March 24, 2008
This review is from: A Life in Time – The Roy Haynes Story (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This is an all around great box-set! Haynes ranks among the greatest ever in jazz percussion, having played with many of the jazz greats. This set offers material from not only Haynes himself, but his side-work with Coltrane, Dolphy, Vaughn, Corea and other legends. This set will particularly appeal to jazz drummers, but the whole set swings and will be enjoyed by any true jazz fan. Check it out!!!

Wow!! A jazz drummer who can play rock, with feeling. Roy Haynes is truly a drummer for the ages. Bebop, cool, straight ahead, funk, jazz-rock. 50's, 60's , 70's 80's. 90's, New milenia. He keeps them all in their unique rhythms. The DVD is worth the price of the whole set, and the whole set is priceless.

There could not be a better retrospective or a better history of modern jazz as seen through the work of a single individual. From Charlie Parker through Haynes's current reedman Jaleel Shaw, the common thread is the one remarkable drummer. The inter-connections ("degrees of separation") probably comprise every major jazz musician (and probebly hundreds of lesser ones) of at least the last 60 years, and right up to the moment. The choices of pieces and quality of sound are superlative. And that's just the three CD's of music! The fourth (and the booklet)provide oral context, a personal interview, and, to indulge in understatement, "a drum solo".

I had the great pleasure of seeing Mr. Haynes perform a few weeks ago: the first half of the show being his current first-rate group; the second an all-star group (Danilo Perez, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Holland--- how's that?) with the ageless Haynes in command. This set is every bit as much fun, fantastic music. This is really one for the ages!
