This review is from: The Life and Times of Laurel and Hardy (Life and Times Series) (Hardcover)
There are many L & H books out there..I've never found one to dismiss. This work is extra special. Though a little short on film commentary, especially on the post Roach efforts, the quality of the writing and (what appears to this fan) and the rarity of the photos put it at the top, or very near the top of the list of the hardcover, "coffeetable" variety.Although I said that the author is a little light on "post Roach" - and, by the way, has some errors with dates of photos and with chronology, the most fascinating feature are the presumptive prevously unpublished phots from 1947 to 1954. The "Boys" certainly look happy and energetic, having survived personal and professional trauma (the mediocre at best later films, the disappointing and agonizing experience in France for the final movie). The reader will love those later snapshots..but at the same time lament that the movie and TV industry caught up with them a little too late and their "comeback" (to be produced by Hal Roach's son) never got beyond a very loose draft for the first episode of a TV Series for 1956. My copy was originally a discarded Library copy..but I can tell you that it will not find its' way back!! |
