A great story of ingenuity and an illustrated time capsule,
By Rod (Port Ludlow, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life and Times of a Ragamuffin: Growing up Wild (Paperback)
Having lived part of the experiences in this book, I found it a great trip down memory lane. The simple drawings and descriptions of the equipment and procedures involved in the salvage of materiels from old mines in southwestern Colorado provides a time capsule. These descriptions will help future readers understand terminology of times gone by. The author's father gave him responsibilities far beyond his age. In accomplishing these responsibilities, the author exhibited great ingenuity and skill in carrying out the many difficult and dangerous tasks he was given to help support his father's savage business. The author's intelligence, determination and outgoing personality carried him from his humble beginnings (with an alcoholic father) through college with degrees in engineering and business and then on to a successful career.

Great details for lovers of early western Colorado, humor and machinery mts and,

Delightful detailed memoir of an adventurous young boy who began helping his father (a resourceful demolisher and recycler of western Colorado mining and farm equipment) who, when sober, passed on a wealth of mechanical and life knowledge to his son. Includes strong character delineation of the author's saintly mother, loving sister, and other residents of the rural Silverton-Eureka-Montrose area in the '30s and '40s.
