Here Rosa presents stories hat did not fit into the original Scrooge Life and Times storyline. The stories here focus on the Yukon and Scrooges troubled relationship with Glittering Goldie. 5.0 out of 5 stars Actually quite good..., June 1, 2007
This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
Here Rosa presents stories hat did not fit into the original Scrooge Life and Times storyline. The stories here focus on the Yukon and Scrooges troubled relationship with Glittering Goldie. Again, Rosa departs from Barks and creates realistic three-dimensional characters, wtih real feelings and motivations. Some of these stories I cannot believe why they were not included in the original collection! Here, even Donald Duck gets an opportunity to show his (well-hidden) compassion and Scrooge finally finds redemption with Goldie. Magica de Spell is caught in a trap worthy of Barks himself.
Rosa prides himsalf with his historical accuracy, but I did find an error - Isaac Parker was the Hanging Judge, not Roy Bean.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Perfect Companion, November 10, 2006

Barry N. Sitompul (Brisbane, QLD Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
This book provides stories of Scrooge's life adventures which were not included in the original "Life and Times" book. If you think the stories in the original book were already good, in this one they just got better! Wait till you read "the Prisoner of White Agony Creek" chapter. In addition, I was truly amazed by the chapter "the Cowboy Captain of Cutty Sark". The historical facts and names about the island that Scrooge visited were correctly written even though in my opinion, they would give problems to most native english speakers. (I was born on that island, and I have lived there for more than half of my life). This book contains some of the best of Don Rosa's work. A Masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suitable companion, June 28, 2007
This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
This trade paperback collects the pre-, post-, and in-between chapters of gifted storyteller Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and it's excellent fun. Essentially Rosa uses every bit of Carl Barks-created Scrooge obscura to create a gripping adventure that is both entertaining and nuanced. All-ages material at its finest.

Some of Don's best work, what can I say great stories! The prisoner of white agony creek being the best of them all, very romantic and Don treated the subject of Scrooge's secret love very well leaving none unhappy with the great scenes between Scrooge and his Goldie!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun addendum, March 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
This book makes no pretenses that it is as good or as important of a work as the main "Life and Times" volume. That said, it is an enjoyable if somewhat scatter-shot collection of Rosa tales penned both before and after the main series that also interleave with those stories and Barks' original tales.

Inside you'll find an alternate perspective of how Scrooge earned his first dime, a multiple dose of Glittering Goldie, the return of Pothole McDuck, and more. There are also essays by the author that discuss his motivations and feelings about each included work.

My chief complaints have little to do with content and everything to do with presentation. I am by no means a "collector" that must keep all of his books in archival shape. However, my copy came arrived from Amazon looking scuffed. I'm not sure how to describe, really, the somewhat worn appearance of the cover, which is peppered with tiny gray splotches where something transfered onto it and small white bits where something removed the color from it. I might have sent it back for another, but I didn't want the hassle.

Also, I must agree with one reviewer that in some places the colors are out of alignment with the outlines in the interior of the book. However, I disagree with that same reviewer in that I found the colors themselves to be quite vibrant, possibly more so than in the main volume of "Life and Times."

Finally, I'm not sure why one tale was included only as an excerpt. I suppose only the portion dealing with Scrooge's early life was included. I wouldn't know where to find the complete tale or what was left out. It is labeled as a "bonus tale" so we're not supposed to complain. However, it may be a sour note for completists.

I dock this book 1 star for the condition it was in upon arrival from Amazon and also for the interior printing. My apologies to the author, as I would otherwise give this a 5-star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jade Warrior, January 27, 2012

The art work is classic Disney. Don Rosa is in a class by himself. The scenes are very detailed, and evoke a mood and a time past. I love Scrooge's money bin! The adventure stories Uncle Scrooge relates to Donald and Huey, Dewey and Louie are marvelous. Again, work well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars The life of "Unca Scrooge" by Don Rosa., December 10, 2009

This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
I had already the original version (the "non-companion), and decided to buy this for the extra stories, and it didn't dissapoint. This is a great work of art! It is sad Mr. Rosa has never recieved the recognition he deserves like other workers in the comic industry like Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman. Really a must have for any duck fan!

This review is from: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (Paperback)
My son has a copy of this book already and my 14 year old greatnephew found it and is reading it whenever he visits us. So I decided to get him a copy for his Christmas gift this year. I know he's going to read it. If you've got someone who dosen't like to read this is a good choice for them.

As good as the first volume, the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, it fits subsequent stories into Scrooge's time-line.
