Solid, serious, simple and sometimes dark western,
By Honest Abe (United States) - See all my reviews Let's face it, Willie Nelson is not known for his acting chops, but amazingly enough, that blank look he often has on his face in this movie (probably because he was trying to remember his lines) actually works in favor of the character he plays in this film. He seems to be deeply lost in his own inner turmoil as a devout preacher who comes face to face with some of life's most daunting situations. His externally beautiful wife with an equally ugly inside, complains because she doesn't like her new surroundings that he husband has brought her to. She promptly leaves with a slick traveling gambler, leaving her husband virtually alone among a town of yellow cowards and a villianous patriarch and his vile sons. Wille Nelson is perfect as a preacher who loses his faith, murders his wife and her lover and stands up to the man who wants to own the town and everyone in it. No, this movie is not as good as Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, but it strikes a similar chord. No, this isn't even close to a John Wayne western of any kind, it's darker and has a more ominous tone than anything the Duke would have dreamed of being a part of. This isn't a big budget film. It's a small story driven film, albeit a simple story. Aren't all the best westerns simple stories anyway?

Not DVD of movie Red Headed Stranger of 1986,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I received a DVD THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WILLE NELSON THE RED HEADED STRANGER. IT'SA VERY ENTERTAINING DVD - BUT NOT THE MOVIE THAT Honest Abe, the first reviewer describes. I"m afraid that I will never get a DVD of one of my favorite movies, The Red Headed Stranger. This is the 2nd time I ordered RED HEADED STRANGER only to get the wrong version. The first time was not from Amazon.

Great Movie, Wrong Medium, Maybe Wrong Material,
By Texas Bob (Spring, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Life And Times Of Willie Nelson : Red - Headed Stranger (DVD)
This DVD is "Region 2" format, meaning it is made for Europe and unlikely to play on US players. There was no warning of this until I opened the package. The label made it clear that removing the Region 2 warning and opening the jewel case would make it unacceptable for returning, so I am not sure whether or not the "Red Headed Stranger" movie is on the disc. However, the part of the package that I can see makes it seem very unlikely that it contains the movie. I bought this item because it is sometimes described as the Red Headed Strnager movie. But, it is also sometimes described as "The Life And Times Of Willie Nelson". Be careful! By the way, the movie is great if you enjoy Willie!
