'Still Searching'...With A Little Bit More,
By Lance G. Augustine (The Midwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Life Is Not a Waiting Room (Audio CD)
In a sentence, if you liked 'Still Searching', you'll like 'Life Is Not A Waiting Room', and maybe even more.
There seems to be just a tad more emphasis on the guitar work by Garrett and Heath, and there's enough variety in the songs to please most fans of this eclectic group...it seems like they're making an attempt to reach a greater audience...to really 'make it'. Vocalist James "Buddy" Nielsen attempts to sing you through a whirlwind of emotions, and, considering that he broke up with his first-love, long-time girlfriend, and that some songs were inspired by a friend he met who had cancer but didn't make it, he easily succeeds. Although some will beg to differ, I believe Buddy's vocals and the lyrics on this record are outstanding...perhaps his best effort yet. Despite having everything from very melodic and catchy pop-punk (a very edgy 'Boys Like Girls'?) to heavy, hardcore "screamo" metal, 'Life' excels when different atmospheres are created, such as on 'Fireworks At Dawn', 'Yellow Angels' and 'Map The Streets'. While I admit I'm not much for the furious fare ('Lungs Like Gallows' and 'Wolves At The Door'), the album is strong from top to bottom...even the small amount of "screamo" is tastefully done. Overall, Senses Fail shows progress on 'Life Is Not A Waiting Room'...definitely a success in my book.

Not a Bad Follow Up...,
This review is from: Life Is Not a Waiting Room (Audio CD)
I have all of Senses Fail's albums and have been a fan ever since they came about.
Senses Fail really made an impression with Still Searching and it would be almost impossible to surpass it. "Life is Not a Waiting Room" has some of the qualities that Still Searching has but doesn't quite live up to it. The single "Family Tradition" really sounded a lot like it was going to be the sound of the whole album, but its not. Though it does have some of the best lyrics in any Senses Fail song. The cd is almost like a mixture of Screamo/Rock. Some songs sound a lot more rockish wish few screaming and others go all out. Buddy Nielsen has the strongest lyrics here more than any other album. It's not a bad album. I was a little bit dissapointed in the fact I thought it was going to be a Still Searching follow up but nonetheless its still a good solid album to listen to. My favorite songs on the album and the ones to check out are "Life is Not a Waiting Room", "Map the Streets" and "Hair of the Dog." Look for the strong lyrics and the pleasing guitar.

Good follow up to Still Searching,

I first got into Senses Fail via Let It Enfold You,(still their best album), and have stuck with them since. Still Searching was different than LIEY because they seemed to explore musical genres more than the traditional screamo, although some of the later tracks on that album were too boring and nearly un-rock-like. Now picking up this album, I hear songs that could easily have been on LIEY or Still Searching, which is pretty good from a balance perspective. Fast-paced tracks such as "Wolves at the Door" and "Lungs like gallows" are my favorite, although "Blackout" has an excellent bridge. Family Tradition should make for a good single, and I see them gaining even more fans out of this new sound. I give it 4 out of 5 stars mostly because it starts to fall prey to Still Searching's flaw of having 3 or 4 songs I could frankly do without. They come dangerously close to sounding like Panic at the disco or Fall-out boy in these moments, and that is not why I listen to Senses fail. Overall a good album from a great band, if you have liked them previously, you should enjoy this endeavor.
