Set in the early nineteen-eighties, presumably in East Germany, the story is told in the first person by an unnamed woman. As the story begins, the narrator encounters a little girl, all alone, sitting in the garden next to her apartment building. The little girl is apparently waiting for her grandmother, but her grandmother never appears.

I had the feeling that the narrator was telling the story in a quiet voice, speaking very slowly. I found myself drawn into the story. The effect of the narration was almost hypnotic, and I did not want to stop reading, repeatedly telling myself “One more chapter.” I loved the author’s writing style. You encounter what appear to be run-on sentences, but you realize that she uses these constructions to move the story along quickly.

The reader quickly understands that the characters live in an oppressive society. The narrator ad her friend from across the hall, Anja, must be careful that no one knows that they have found the girl. The consequences for the girl will be bad, and we have the impression that those who have found her will also find themselves in trouble.

While the book is not action-packed, the story moves forward consistently, step-by-step. As you learn more about the two adults, particularly Anja, you become curious about their lives, you wonder how the little girl fits into their stories, and you become concerned for everyone’s safety.

This is a wonderful book! The story has suspense. There is mystery. There is even a surprise love story. I recommend it highly!

This book has an intriguing, intricate plot relating to a young girl found in a garden. The book has descriptive details about life behind the Iron Curtain. I found the book hard to put down and read it in two days. I am a fan of writings on the cold war and enjoyed this heart-warming story.

I loved how the author gave you just enough but not everything. Putting the pieces together made me finish it in one sitting. I felt that the reader was left hanging when it comes to Marko. What happens with those two?

I liked the story, it showed how some will give all to protect others. I found it a little bit confusing at times, but I can't complain too much because it was free!

It kept my interest enough to finish it but not sure where the story's setting is (behind the Berlin Wall/Iron Curtain somewhere) & the characters just didn't seem real. Could have used better editing in so may ways.
