Reading Life Without Crows makes me wonder if Gerri Leen is hearing voices. She often utilized the first person point of view, but it is never the same "I" speaking. Her characters are as diverse as hillbillies, vampires, talking horses, and werecrows. But I don't want to give the impression that this is a collection that may only be enjoyed by lovers of high fantasy. If there's anything these characters have in common, it's depth and sincerity. Though quietly wrought, these stories abound with scintillating twists and denouements. Each one is so fresh, pure and unique. Every one is satisfying. It's a book to be savored.

Have you ever awakened from a deep sleep - generally late in the afternoon - and, while your brain is still malleable and prone to suggestion, combined two completely unrelated notions in a way that just makes perfect sense in the moment? "Wouldn't it just be SO interesting if instead of happening then and there . . . " While most of us just enjoy our groggy cleverness for a few fleeting seconds, then promptly forget about it, I imagine Gerri Leen keeps a notebook next to her bed (and uses it)! These stories are very imaginative, are well-paced, and contain dialogue so natural and effortless it is clear that she has served her time at the kitchen table, mastering her art by writing and writing and writing. Indeed, upon flipping though the book, one might easily mistake it for an anthology of "Best of" fiction from a dozen very talented writers; but it's all her. Weaving effortlessly from the historical to the mythological, contemporary to ancient, terrestrial to extra-terrestrial, Leen delivers a solid collection of stories that will sustain and enlighten her audience though many readings and re-readings.

I knew Ms. Leen could write excellent sci-fi; I knew she could write fabulous romance. But I didn't know that she could so effortlessly juggle so many different genres, settings and characters in so little space; if there's a flaw here it's that she makes it look so darned easy.

Every story here is captivating and leaves the reader wanting more. The characters are as diverse as they are fully-fleshed and intriguing, and the situations she puts them into range from the familiar to the otherworldly. The common thread is the depth of emotion conveyed, and how nothing is quite as it appears.

This is a brilliant collection, and I'll return to it again.
