I bring to life the human character in Dunbars poetry and prose as 'Lias' Mother and when I perform or present workshops on Dunbar to schools, libraries, churches, Civil War Roundtables and many other public and private organizations I recommend this book everytime!

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Dunbar, Americas First Great Negro Poet, January 3, 2008
Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in Dayton Ohio in 1872. His parents had taught themselves to read and passed on their love of learning and reading to their only son.

This fascinating narrative is Dunbar's on account of his life as he struggled against racism to become "the poet laureate of the Negro race."

Dunbar was without question the dominate literary black of the period. He wrote poetry in the rhythm of the days black folks. He wrote both novels and poetry books, becoming friends with Frederick Douglass.

At 34 Dunbar died of tuberculosis.

This book is a beautiful book, a green cover with gold lettering. It has several wonderful photographs. It is the 7th volume of Candace Press's Heritage Series.
