I searched for ever and came across the latest Consumer Report magazine and discovered the Lifecore Fitness CD-400 elliptical. I took the plunge and purchased this machine. The CD-400 is ultra compact and fits perfect in my space. This elliptical is built like a tank. It does not move around when I'm at full speed. There is not a up and down motion like most elliptical's. The center drive concept is to keep your body centered (read lifecore brochure). Other elliptical's move your body forward and it's harder on your knees. If your looking for high quality and compact look no further. I have purchased other items from Lifecore and their customer service is also awesome. They actually still answer the phone whern you call them. Wish other companies would take note

I recently ordered and received (two weeks later) the LifeCore CD400 Elliptical Trainer. Shipping to our remote NM location while slow, worked out OK. Product is extremely well packaged and the shipment arrived undamaged. The package is nearly 300# so your trucker will have to deliver it with a lift gate. You will need at least two strong people or a hand truck to move the base of the unit from the box to the room where you will assemble the unit. Assembly instructions were good, step by step, all the nuts, bolts and screws were in the packages and the machine went together in about 3 hours. We did encounter a problem at the end of the assembly process. Installed the computer panel up top which controls the machine but it did not work. Took machine back apart, checked and cleaned all the connections, and it still did not work. Called the company and they are sending a replacement computer via FEDEX. When I called the company, someone actually answered the phone, took the information and said they would send the computer which is pretty nice. The machine is usable now (without computer and programmed workouts, pulse meter, resistance adjustment) and I must say that even as is, it is one great workout. The stride of the machine feels just right for me. I have used other ellipticals before but the stride always felt odd- like I was wearing snowshoes or something. This one seems just right. I am anxious to use it with a working computer! If the computer had worked out of the box, I would have given a 5 star rating.

I ordered The CD400 and it came right on time. As other reviewers have noted, it weighs 300 lbs and mine came on a standard wooden pallet. I'm a 170 lb. man and I was able to unpack the crate in the garage and move each part and assemble in the house by myself - but it was heavy. The instructions recommed 2-man assembly but I found that this wasn't really necessary.
The good:
The unit is well built and the assembly instructions are good. I especially appreciated that the bolts and instructions for each step of assembly were separately bagged. That made things very organized and handy.
The unit worked great right off the bat. No problems at all after about 3 hours of assembly, although it took longer to clean up that pallet and all the packing material afterward.
The unit is quiet in operation which is nice. It's more compact than some eliptical trainers and that's the primary reason I chose it. I exercise each morning, while reading the newspaper on-line on a computer monitor hanging on a wall in front of the machine. I had to find equipment that would get me close enough to the front wall to see that monitor. There is some clearance needed in the front of teh CD400, but it's close enough to meet my need.
Warning:
The surprise to me that I haven't seen in any reviews while researching eliptical trainers is that the highest setting is barely enough to get my heart rate to where it needs to be. This unit has settings from 1 to 20 and I find that I need to use setting 20 to get to my target heart rate. There's no more headroom if I wanted more resistance. One can always increase the pace to get more aerobic action, but I'm not comfortable at more than 3.0 - 3.3 mph. If you're an athelete (I'm not), then you may want to watch out for this.
The very most important point for me is reliability. I exercise 6 mornings a week for 30 minutes. I owned a stepper for 10 years and it broke down about once every year or two with broken belts and bearings. I've only had the CD400 for 3 weeks and I can't tell what will break first, or how hard it will be to fix it when the time comes. I wish more reviewers with some history would comment on reliability. I'll post a follow-up myself if something breaks early.
