The award-winning, world-renowned LifeStraw Family 1.0 large volume water filter can filter out viruses from an incredible 18,000 liters of water (4,750 gallons) — enough to supply a family of five with clean drinking water for up to three years.

This gravity filter is easy to use. Just pour water in the top, and clean water comes out the bottom. And it comes in a sealed bag, perfect for storing for emergencies.

Lightweight and highly portable, LifeStraw Family is perfect for camping. It makes filtering water a breeze at base camps, while car camping, or when camping with groups. It's also great to have at home in the event of boil water advisories. In addition to purifying contaminated tap water, in a worst case scenario you can use the Family to remove bacteria, protozoa, and viruses from a fresh water source near your home with the LifeStraw Family.

The LifeStraw Family water filter has been distributed to nearly every major international humanitarian disaster since 2005 and in broad public health campaigns in the millions. The same rugged design used in places like Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Pakistan and Bangladesh is now available for consumers in North America.

How LifeStraw Family Works

LifeStraw Family uses advanced hollow fiber technology. Water is forced through narrow fibers under high pressure. Clean water exits through tiny pores in the walls of the hollow fibers, but bacteria, protozoa, and other contaminants are trapped inside the hollow fibers and are flushed out by backwashing — making this a highly efficient method of filtration.

  • Hang top reservoir using included string, and let the hose hang down.
  • Fill reservoir (scoop directly from a stream, or pour water into it).
  • Removable pre-filter inside reservoir removes coarse particles.
  • Gravity forces water down hose and through hollow fiber membrane cartridge where bacteria, parasites, and viruses are removed.
  • Turn blue tap to release clean water out small hose on side of cartridge.
  • Backwash filter by squeezing red bulb with both taps closed and then releasing dirty water from red tap. Do not drink water from red tap.

We purchased a Lifestraw Family and 2 Lifestraw Personals. Got them home then decided to test them before writing a review. First off, the directions are very clear, concise and simple to follow. We went down to the river here in town and got a large bottle full of river water and a large bottle of water from a small adjacent pond. We got home, followed the directions precisely and ran the river water through the lifestraw family. A note about the river and pond water. The Poudre River, where we got the water, was involved in the recent disastrous floods here in Weld County, Colorado, so it and the pond water saw a huge increase in the contamination that results from these floods. We poured a small glass. The water was perfectly clear, no odor, so I took in a mouthful. It tasted like it had just come out of a kitchen commercial water filter. I waited about an hour, no effects at all, then finished the glass. Couldn't let good water go to waste! The real test was coming up, doing the same thing with the nasty pond water. I performed the same test with it, following the directions to the letter. Absolutely no ill effects at all. The water tasted great!! My girlfriend and I highly recommend the Lifestraw Family! Just please run your own test because everyone's system responds differently to germs. We plan on getting 2 more Lifestraw Family filters and several more Lifestraw Personals.

I had been searching for an affordable emergency filtration system. I purchased several of the LifeStraws for our family emergency bags, so when I saw the same company made a family size filtration system, I was thrilled. One system filters a tremendous amount of water - over 4700 gallons - without using harmful chemicals and without needing replacement filters. You MUST read the directions and follow them carefully - if you do, it's not that difficult and it works just as it's supposed to as far as I can tell (I tried it out with pool water). It works by gravity so will be useful in any situation. It's a bit on the large size so isn't ideal for emergency packs which is why I have the LifeStraws as well. This filter is supposed to filter enough water for a family of 4 to survive on for 3 years. I have a family twice that size, so will definitely be purchasing another of these filters! This is hands-down the best emergency water filtration unit out there for the price!

Did a lot of research on this item, and this is not only the best filter on the market, but Amazon has the best deal. We live in Florida, and hurricanes can take out a drinking water supply for weeks at a time. Having this makes me feel a bit more secure. Check for a promotional discount at checkout...ours was 50% off.

I lived in western Kenya for about 3 months and the family I stayed with had been given one of these by an NGO. I bought a couple of 3 gallon bottles of water from a supermarket and once they were empty, I only ever filled them with their LifeStraw and I never had any health issues due to drinking water. My wife and I are about to start a new project in Zambia and we purchased our own unit to bring with us. I know that the product works well although it can be a little tricky to get it flowing correctly. It should be noted: we did open it to ensure that everything was ok and turned out they had failed to include the red rubber squeeze pump which is necessary for cleaning the unit. Their customer service immediately sent us the missing part, however based on other people's reviews, I'd recommend that everyone double check their package to ensure they have the entire unit. We almost ended up in Zambia with a non-functional product.

I purchased the Lifestraw from Amazon almost a year ago, and after using it a few times in the remote desert of the southwest, I was very excited when Amazon offered the Family system. I was originally going to save it until it was needed, in order to keep it clean and dry. But then i realized there are small ventilation holes in the packaging. No big deal so I decided to go ahead and see what it could do. I set it up in my garage because it is a gravity-feed system. Overall, it's about 5 feet from top to bottom, but I would say you need 6 feet of space so you have space to fill the dark blue pre filter and space for clean water collection at the bottom. When I purchased it, it looked like you could use the blue scoop-looking pre filter to fill it, as I set it up it was immediately clear that would not work. Not a big deal either, but just in case you have the same thought I did, now you know. I timed 1 cup of clean water in 1:30 exactly. If my math is correct, this leads to 1 gallon in 24 minutes, and a 5-gallon jug in 2 hours flat. This was with clean water out of my garden hose, so at the pre filter does its job, it will slow this down. How fast depends on how dirty your water is. Also, the pre filter is really easy to clean, it just slides out and you swish it in some water.

I wouldn't call it a negative, but the package is not re-closeable. At first I thought it would be a pain to keep clean and store it. Then as I was setting it up, I realized I was using a 5-gallon bucket to scoop water into the filter. I decided to drain the filter and let it dry for a little while then I just put it in my "source" bucket that I would probably be getting water with from the river in the event I actually needed to use the filter.
