1.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly useless, August 14, 2008
By
Dirk Bernhardt-Walther (Champaign, IL, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: LifeTips 101 Baby Travel Tips (Paperback)
Wow, this book is amazingly useless if you've ever traveled before (with or without baby). Many of the "tips" are so generic and obvious that I started looking for a hidden meaning.

Examples for the obvious: Getting to the airport early with a baby so that you are not too rushed. Duh! Have your boarding pass ready. Double Duh! On the list of Not-so-family-friendly vacations (#34): a trip to China seeing 11 cities in 14 days. Who would have thought.

Examples for the generic: Tip 42 on page 55 suggests that if you are taking a road trip to San Francisco "you want a stroller that can handle walks up and down the hills and streets of the city." Never mind, getting an extra stroller for each trip you are taking - which strollers exactly would the authors recommend for a trip to SF? Instead of an answer, they point to the extensive reviews in the Baby Bargain Book. As if to say: If you want practical and concrete suggestions read another book.

Often, we knew more already from a few internet searches than what was written in the book. For example, tip 2 on page 8 discusses the pro and cons of taking a stroller or a carrier with you around the airport. It never mentions that there is a hybrid by Kelty, a convertible carrier, that can work as a carrier and a stroller. Tip 25 on page 40 discusses Club Med and Beaches as Resort Options. The Baby Club Med program for infants from 4-23 months is mentioned w/o noticing that it is only offered in a few resorts. In particular, Club Med Cancun - listed as particularly family friendly - does not offer that program. Moreover, the most relevant information that Club Med has substantial sales in July/August for these family resorts never made it into this book.

The most surprising advice, however, came from the very first tip: Nurse your infant during take-off and landing. Isn't that exactly the time where you want your infant to be safe and secure in their car seat next to yours? How about: nurse your infant *before* take-off and landing but have bottle with water, breast milk or formula ready for them to suck on during take-off and landing.

The list goes on and on. In the end, if you've ever seen an airport from the inside, don't bother with this book. For concrete tips on baby travel products such as carriers or strollers, stick to [...].

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for new parents, May 7, 2007
This review is from: LifeTips 101 Baby Travel Tips (Paperback)
I highly recommend this to all new parents facing the age-old dilemma "Dare we try taking the baby out, or just avoid the hassle and stay home." This book makes things much easier by providing a lot of helpful tips and resources for parents ready to take their babies out. Topics include car travel, airplanes, cruises, strollers, first aid, hotel baby proofing, travel friendly toys, deals, etc. The best thing about this book is that it presents a wealth of information in a very slick, compact format with a clean layout that provides for a quick "flip through" read, unlike some other 10 lb. baby reference books that just collect dust on the shelves. Also makes a great gift for new mommies (and it's cheap too!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best resource available, August 3, 2007
This review is from: LifeTips 101 Baby Travel Tips (Paperback)
What makes this book better than the other books I read are the tips themselves (which are obviously sourced from experienced parents) and that all the weblinks, travel info and product recommendations mentioned are up-to-date. The other books I got online had really outdated info, so I ended up only using this one when preparing to fly with my 10-month old for the first time. For a travel-sized guide, it's packed with info so in addition to the general travel tips, it also gives specific advice for traveling with baby on a train, on a roadtrip, at a hotel, camping, etc.
