Editorial Reviews

One could suggest that the names Klaus Doldinger & Passport could be synonymous, for they really are one and the same. The driving force behind the group Passport, for almost four decades now has been Klaus Doldinger. We now add 8 more titles to our already extensive Passport catalog. All of these titles are making their U.S. CD debuts, being only available as high price import CDs if you can find them.

I was initially hesitant to purchase this 2-Disc set because so little info is available on it.
Apparently this is a live set recorded over several years originally released around 1981 as a 2-disc set. I discovered a listing for lots of guest musicians backing Saxophonist/Leader Klaus Doldinger and i'm personally more interested in hearing either the Passport band line-up or Doldinger all-solo (as in the studio album "Constellation")and not in a setting with an army of guest artists (like Etta James who appears here among many others).
Well, it turn out that these guests appear only on 1/4 of the album (what was originally the 3rd vinyl side) with the other 3/4's of the album by the early 1980's lineup of Passport (which I love), the quintet that recorded "Blue Tattoo"(1981)(one of my favorite Passport studio albums) and "Oceanliner" (1980).
Armed with this info I finally ordered this CD . Here's the info on the original vinyl release I found on the internet for those (like me) who like to know some details on the recordings we purchase:

Live double album recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977 & 1980 and at concerts in Stuttgart and Mainz in June, 1980.

Side 1: Featuring Klaus Doldinger, Kevin Mulligan, Hendrik Schaper, Dieter Petereit & David Crigger
1. Introduction by Claude Nobs
2. Shirokko
3. Guna Guna
4. Bahia Do Sol

Side 2: Featuring Klaus Doldinger, Kevin Mulligan, Hendrik Schaper, Dieter Petereit & David Crigger

Like the previous reviewer, I was hesitant to buy Lifelike at first because of the lack of album information. Now that I own it, I have found that it is just a potluck album, with no overarching theme or any kind of continuity. That being said, there are at least a few tunes to like here.
On Disc one, I most enjoyed the funky Shirokko and the melodic, well-defined Guna Guna. The rest of the side I found rather weak, particularly Ostinato, which is too drawn out and pseudo-psychedelic. Disc two starts out well with Jadoo, a spirited mix of funk and big band elements. Sambukada is an exciting piece with a Latin touch Doldiger-style. Then Stormy Monday moves along just fine until Etta James kind of ruins it with repeated "Lawd have mussy" shouts. After that, the rest of the side is just OK.
Jazz fans might be excited by guest appearances of Richard Tee and Herbie Mann, but I was unimpressed with the participation of Etta James and the Average White Band. Overall, Lifelike is not a bad album but its not one I would recommend. There are far too many good Passport albums available to have to settle for this mediocrity. Take my word for it and get a different live Passport album instead.
